Why DON'T chickens cross the street?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) May 7th, 2010

I live in Ohio, so I don’t have to drive terribly far to find farmland. Even country homes that keep chickens are pretty easy to come across if you drive far enough in the right direction. So many times in my life I’ve seen front yards full of chickens/roosters… with no fence. Yet they never seem to go into the street…. can anyone explain why? Is there a chicken electric fence?

Any chance they all just remember the few times a chicken did cross the street and it became a freakin’ massacre?

@papayalily I thought chickens were relatively stupid. I could be wrong, though…. good theory, I’ll look into that. :)

@TheOnlyNeffie I’m not familiar with the intelligence level of chickens. Or any forms of poultry, for that matter.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@papayalily I actually just looked it up, and it seems that I’m way off base… that chickens are actually quite intelligent. Shame on me.

Because they don’t care what’s on the other side.

How many doors does a chicken coop have?

Chickens do not cross the street because of the new Tyson chicken plant thats just been built. chickens may look stupid, but crossing the street would be sure death.

Tyson is calling all chickens to attend their seminar.

Its free.

Chickens are intelligent?? I have to go look that up. As a farmgirl, I would beg to differ. I think they are too lazy to go as far as the road.

It may have to do with the feel of asphalt or concrete under their feet. Roosters and chickens like grasses and dirt.

They may also have associated the pavement with heat.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@NeroCorvo that makes a lot of sense, I bet that’s exactly what it is.

Because they have their cocks under control, unlike us men where the situation tends to be vice versa.

@ucme Nice pun.

Iy’s ‘cause they know they’ll get hit! I still don’t like crossing the street.

Because there are no cats or foxes on their side of the street to compel them. They also live in vegan households.
