Yes. In a heartbeat.

in fact i have a list . . .

CaptainHarley's avatar

I have already done so. Six times, that I know of.

xxii's avatar

Wait. Am I able to choose whose life I’m ending, or is it just any random person in the world whose identity is unknown to me?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

That one thing I’ve always wanted would have to be a life of my love or child about to be taken away by the person whose life I’ll take to save them. No other reason would ever suffice.

XoXoDIExOxO's avatar

@xxii you would be able to choose.

xxii's avatar

Oh, well then of course.

dpworkin's avatar

I do it all the time. You probably do too.

Draconess25's avatar

My brother, some kids from high school, my biological father, my sister-in-law’s father…......

TexasDude's avatar

Nope. The only circumstances under which I would kill are in defense of myself, a loved one, or a stranger. I wouldn’t risk fucking up the course of history just by killing someone randomly in exchange for a prize.

Kismet's avatar

No, I don’t dislike a person enough to want to kill them.
To be honest, I don’t think I dislike anyone individual.
Though I will disagree with some of people’s beliefs and opinions, it doesn’t mean I dislike the person as a whole. . . or enough to want to end their life.

Plus, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I did.

dpworkin's avatar

Sorry. I missed the part about person. So I don’t do it all the time, but in the right circumstances I don’t see why not.

liminal's avatar

No. In fact, I choose no everyday.

xxii's avatar

I would kill someone who I thought deserved to die.

Dr_Lawrence's avatar

I would only kill to protect a loved one whose life or safety is threatened by that person.
I would not seek any benefit for doing so nor would I accept one.

lillycoyote's avatar

Kill someone just to get a wish fulfilled? Just to get something for myself? No, of course not.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Ditto @Blondesjon but I’d do even if I wasn’t getting a gift in return. I’d do it just to keep innocent people from being harmed.

Ltryptophan's avatar

Why kill anyone, they are just going to die anyway!

shego's avatar

@Ltryptophan I agree with you.
Besides, if I want something that bad, I work for it, because it makes me feel better that I earned it.
So no, I wouldn’t and couldn’t.

SeventhSense's avatar

Yes but not for personal profit. That would not be sufficient for me to take a life. I abhor the thought.

Ltryptophan's avatar

@shego, not only are they going to die, but they are going to die relatively soon in the grand scheme of things!

Dr_C's avatar

Nope. I live by the phrase “primum non nocere”. In fact… it’s kind of an oath in my line of work.

My personal preferences, opinions, wants and/or needs do not take priority over the life of another.

evandad's avatar

Many of them

Seaofclouds's avatar

I guess in a way you could say that I facilitated someone’s death before. I had a hospice patient that was ordered a tapered dose of morphine for discomfort and difficulty breathing. While morphine along won’t kill a patient, it does relax them enough for their body to give out peacefully. I have given that final dose of morphine to a few patients during my career.

tranquilsea's avatar

Huh, good question. Very timely as I’m in the process of reading Crime and Punishment.

I, would not kill someone unless they were going to harm my hubby or one of my kids.

Pandora's avatar

It would depend on the situation. To save someone else or my life, I think I could. I really wouldn’t know until the situation happened. But to just get a wish, I don’t think so. Unless my wish was to get revenge because this person really hurt someone I loved or killed them.
I suppose if the person was also a Hitler type person and I knew they were going to kill hundreds of innocent people than I could do it. But one thing for sure. I would have to have proof that they mean harm to others before I would see them less than an animal. It has to be for the greater good and not for selfish means.
As for helping someone die because they are suffering. I really have no clue if I would have the stomach for that.

SeventhSense's avatar

@tranquilsea
Ahh Dostoevsky….brilliant.

tranquilsea's avatar

@SeventhSense I don’t know why it has taken me so long to read this book! I’ve had it on my radar for years and I’ve had the book for the last two years. I just started it yesterday and I’m 200 pages in. I can’t believe how good it is!

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

Four with my own hands (three rifle, one pistol), numerous others by radio (tac air or artillery). All were in the line of duty; self-defense, protecting my troops or civilians. I could never do this randomly or for some kind of “prize” as the questioner implies. There is one person that I would have killed if my lady hadn’t made me swear never to harm him, he was responsible for severely injuring her (physically and emotionally); she didn’t forgive him, just didn’t want me in prison for the sake of revenge.

YARNLADY's avatar

In certain circumstances, yes. I own a gun, I know how to use it, and I wouldn’t hesitate if it came up. I am also a meat eater, and have seen meat killed for my personal consumption. I am not the squeamish type of person. I also kill spiders who menace me.

shpadoinkle_sue's avatar

When my dad was teaching me to shoot, he told me that if I shouldn’t have or use a gun if I’m not ready to use it when I need to. The idea is still a bit foreign to me, but I think if I had to, I could. As much as it pains me to say that.

Ltryptophan's avatar

If looks could kill, I would be a genocidal maniac!

RedPowerLady's avatar

If it were a situation of my life vs. theirs then maybe. If it were the situation of my daughter’s life or theirs probably. If it were a long suffering friend who begged me to help them then again maybe.

Kraigmo's avatar

I’d kill someone of sound mind who’d beg me to kill them. They’d have to beg a lot, and I’d have to agree with their rationale such as if, they’re dying anyway, and it’s a slow agonizing death

Otherwise, never.

TexasDude's avatar

Just a note, this question raises important additional questions about the concept of liberty. For instance, I would not kill (deprive of liberty) someone unless under the circumstances that they were going to deprive me of liberty in some way. In my mind, the conflict evens out that way.

Therefore, to those who said they would kill for a reward with no direct affront to themselves and I’m sure you all are freedom-loving individuals how do you justify this?

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard has a good point. I consider deprivation of liberty a bit differently. I’d rather be dead (and free) than locked up or so disabled that I’d be dependent on others. That’s a personal choice, I’d never inflict that on others.

TexasDude's avatar

@stranger_in_a_strange_land, I agree. I would rather die of my own accord than suffer the imposed will of another, even if that will led me to the same place. It’s a choice based on principle.

Sophief's avatar

Absolutely. I have one person that I would love to end her life, I wouldn’t shed one tear for her. I would get the greatest gift ever, peace, if she were gone.

perspicacious's avatar

No, I wouldn’t take a person’s life. Now, with bugs it’s a different answer.

SeventhSense's avatar

@Kraigmo
An argument against assisted suicide as well. Who’s going to prove that you didn’t murder him in cold blood though after he’s gone?

nyc_air's avatar

No, because god doesn’t judge a man until the end of his days, so who are we to?

xxii's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard – As I said, there are people alive who don’t deserve to be (in my opinion). Serial rapists. Drug dealers. Hardcore drunk drivers. If I could find someone (in prison or otherwise) who had been irrefutably convicted of any of the above crimes I would take their life even without any net gain for myself.

SeventhSense's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard
No comment. i just wanted to type fiddle creole playing bastard…love that tag

Kraigmo's avatar

@SeventhSense , that’s a legal issue, which is real, but I was speaking outside of the realm of the law.

I’d definitely take the law into account as a potential threat or obstacle and act accordingly.

That’s how I normally live my life. I try to obey the golden rule of doing unto others as I would have them do unto me That rule is applied in my answer to this question.

As for the law, that’s just a framework set in place for social order. American law is pretty cool and works relatively well, but it doesn’t make all legal obedience proper or just. The reduction of suffering is more important to me than obedience to codified rules.

downtide's avatar

I doubt I would have the physical capacity to kill someone who didn’t want to be killed, unless they were already unconscious or tied up or something.

I could see myself perhaps assisting in a suicide/euthanasia under certain circumstances.

SeventhSense's avatar

As for the law, that’s just a framework set in place for social order.
Yes thankfully for the insight of our forebears.

American law is pretty cool and works relatively well, but it doesn’t make all legal obedience proper or just.
You basically said that law doesn’t make all laws proper or just. Not unless those laws are of course deemed to be proper and just by decision. Of course this can never be decided on subjective reasoning alone hence the need for law in the first place.

mattbrowne's avatar

To save my children, yes.

Nullo's avatar

This murder-wish would make an excellent self-defense weapon.

Dr_C's avatar

@Nullo wouldn’t it fall under “pre-meditation” and therefore make a conviction more likely?

Nullo's avatar

@Dr_C If I understand the question properly, it can be activated at any time against any person. If you hang on to it until some wacko shows up and starts acting… criminally misanthropic, you pull out your wish and blow the guy away.
If I’m correct in my assessment, this use is no different than having a single-shot concealed weapon that you can fire while incapacitated, with no chance of missing and zero possibility for collateral damage.
And as a bonus, you get that thing that you wanted!

Reminds me of Scaramanga’s Golden Gun, and the Death Note.

Dr_C's avatar

It’s been so long since I was on this thread I forgot there was a wish involved. My mistake.

Ltryptophan's avatar

I think this is cool to think about. Not necessarily apply.

Here is what I was thinking. Say we are all outfitted from birth with a kill switch. Then we are all also given a secret word for self defense. If ever the moment arises where you feel your life is threatened, you just say your kill word. For targeting you would have 8 squares around you sort of like a king in chess. So you would know which square the attack came from and you could say the kill word and the corresponding letter to where the attack is coming from. Anyone within that square would then be turned off or knocked out, or something. Maybe they could make it where it knocked everyone out, including you so an investigation could be done.

just a very rough idea…for a socialist big brother society…

Nullo's avatar

@Ltryptophan Reminds me of those people in Dune that had corked holes in their necks. Step out of line, and pop! Precious bodily fluids, meet Arrakis.

shpadoinkle_sue's avatar

The only lives I’ve ever ended were those of gants. I think if I had to end a person’s life, I would in self defense. If it’s between them or me, I’d prefer me to win. In reference to euthanasia, I don’t think I could do it.

Anna737's avatar

Ever had a burger? I guess it takes a vegetarian to see the silliness of that question. Unless you are all ALSO vegetarians, I would think you (ultimately) end live(s) each and every day, yeah? Sure hope you folks are right about being the “superior” or “chosen” species, or Your God is gonna be Pretty Mad\...
