What to do in Portland, Maine when you only have a day and a half and are on a budget?

Asked by curiousk (128points) May 10th, 2010

I just got a sweet deal through JetBlue for $10 each way and I ended up booking to Portland, Maine. I will be there with a friend from Tuesday morning to Wed afternoon. What do we do and where do we stay? Do you have any ideas on any cheap hostels to spend the night? Any places to go sightsee?

A harbor boat cruise is lovely on a nice day and shouldn’t be too expensive. The Portland Art Museum has a great collection of Maine contemporary art. Have some conch fritters and clam chowder and Maine (Sea Dog) microbrew down by the water. Walk along Commercial Street by the harbor and dip in and out of shops.

Eat a Flatbread Co.
72 Commercial St.

Watch some single A baseball. The Portland Seadogs are great, make sure to eat a “sea-biscuit ” while you are there.

Portland Museum of Art has some great classic New England works.

I second just walking along Commercial street.

Bring a sweater.

I thought it was Portland Oregon and I was going to suggest some great places to sample good beer.

Go for a walk on the beaches, go take some tours of the lighthouses, check out L.L. Bean (if you like outdoor gear) and definitely try out some lobster…..or as the Mainers say, “lobsta” (I can poke fun since I grew up there haha)
