Is there a single flipping American Bicycle company that makes a decent Roadster?

Asked by Bastion (107points) May 11th, 2010

So i’m going to college soon and need a bike to get around. I’ve decided I want a Roadster, but I cannot find a SINGLE American company that sells or makes them. They’re a great line of bicycles. Anyone know where I can get one without breaking my wallet?

Oh, I just saw without breaking your wallet – no you are out of luck on that one.

buy a used one? it will be like, 1/10 of the price of a new one and you could get an old schwinn or something that was made in the US.

Something similar to that. I have yet to see any schwinns that have struck my fancy.

i guess you just have to get lucky then. i got my schwinn from the 70s for FORTY BUCKS…i put 60 dollars of work into it and now its like new. i love it so much.

ninyjobs, those bikes are pretty fantastic.

I actually own one of their 3-wheelers for a special needs person. They’re a bit pricey but worth every penny.

Ellsworth frames are sweet. When I worked in the bike industry I was impressed the most with their product over any other frame manufacturer.

Craigslist, eBay, yard sales. You have to be diligent and patient. Here’s one I sold earlier this year.

The Torker Graduate is pretty cool. And reasonably priced.

@njnyjobs – I’ve always loved Worksman Industrial Bikes.

Also, Linus Bikes make some really great retro bikes like that as well. Not sure what the LBS prices are on those.

I saw earlier on the thread that someone posted a link for workman bikes which gave me a beach cruiser feel. So if you are looking for something american made that has that overall look/feel and is not expensive you might try this site.

I wish I could be more helpful but my main self-powered conveyance is a road bike which does not seem to fit your criteria. I have however owned beach cruisers in the past for quick errands around town and found these to be extremely comfortable and durable.

Schwinn has been a leader in bicycles for many, many years. their bikes have stood the test of time. i had one as a child and rode the wheels off of it. i give a Schwinn a five star rating.

I believe the Schwinn company has not been an American company for nearly 10 years. The three top American companies I know of are Cannondale, Trek and Specialized

As I said earlier, I have yet to see a Schwinn that has struck my fancy. All of the links you guys have supplied, minus a few, have been fantastic though. Haven’t seen just the right bike yet though.

You should look on Craigslist. My daughter’s experience with new bikes on a college campus is that they get stolen.
