How do i console my friend who lost his job?

My friend was dismissed during probation lately. He is very depressed and self-doubt right now. The supervisor told him that he was working inefficiently, he does not fit the position which needs solid basic algorithm knowledge. My friend still have mortgage to pay every month. so he was pushed so hard. I hope i can relieve him, but i am not good at consolation, please give me some advise how do i console my friend to help him get through this hard moment. Thanks in advance!
