Name suggestions for my new kitty!

Asked by Coloma (47193points) May 14th, 2010

I’d love some fresh mindedness for naming my new adopted girl kitty today.

She is an elegant Torti point Siamese with a loving and playful personality.

Looking for cool, elegant and/or cosmic type names.

Hit me with your best shot! ;-)

I think cats with people’s names are hilarious. The closest thing to Siamese would be Simon. But its a girl. Hmmm toughy. Ok maybe a cat name will have to work in this case. The closest thing I got to a girl name relating to Siamese was Salmonella.

The names I think I’d call cats I got would be “Puddles”, “Poddles” and the hopefully not appropriately named “Piddles”.

It’s a silly belief on my part, but I’ve always felt if you wait, the animal will tell you his or her name.

Whenever I get a new cat I usually wait quite a while before deciding upon a name.

I just want some time to observe it and hopefully be able to come up with something unique to that particular cats looks or personality. Every one is different.

Sometimes it’s based on looks. I had one Callie whose face was the craziest jigsaw puzzle mishmash I had ever seen.

Weirdface wasn’t quite right even tho it described the situation perfectly. It just sounded a bit perjorative. But eventually the fit was perfect with Funny Face. Plus it had a really nice song to go along with it. And she was a funny Callie clown as many of them turn out to be.

My other Callie was very very small in size and was Polydactyl with an extra toe (like a thumb) on each front paw which made her look like she had mittens on. So she became Kitten Mitten and retained her kittenish behavior and size all through her life.

My other kitty was really different. She was quite reserved and dignified and had the softest gray fur I had ever felt on a cat. I had just finished moving and there were a lot of empty liquor boxes/moving boxes strewn all over. As I was holding her petting that lovely fur, my eye caught sight of a box that said Black Velvet. I have no idea what that liquor tastes like, but I just dropped the black and Velvet she became. She was such a dignified cat, so that simple name suited her perfectly.

So, my best suggestion would be to not rush the process. Mull over potential names in your mind until the right one for her particular personality or looks comes to fit. You’ll know it because it will just seem like the most appropriate for her and fits her like a glove.

You’ll find yourself calling her that with ever increasing frequency and you’ll be comfy with it. Don’t feel you have to come up with it in any particular time frame. After all, you’ll be calling her this for the next (hopefully) 20 yrs. or so :)

I don’t understand why this question is in the General section, but ohwell.

Dog. Just name it Dog. You’ll thank me later.

@netgrrl

I was still typing when you posted that, but I think we’re on the same page here.

The right name will come to consciousness one way or another, whether whispered by the spirit of the kitty or the spirit of the universe or whatever. We just have to open ourselves up to the process.

Cat books advise picking a name with two syllables that ends with an “ie” sound. That’s why I seem to call Milo (who arrived with that name) Miley.

Kathy Reichs writes an excellent series of mystery novels with a forensic anthropologist as the heroine. Her endearing fictional cat is called “Birdie,” “Bird” for short.

Here we have Teddy, Rex, Max, Gryphon, Luca, Bentley, and Daisy, in the “hood.

Selene, Emerald, Elyse, Scarlet, Maisie are some suggestions.

I also have a habit of naming my animals after food. I had a chocolate lab named Cocoa, a yellow cat named Peanut, a black cat named Pickle, and two tabbies named Nacho and Tabasco (who came from a litter of five including Chili, Taquito and Sushi!). I dunno, I just do that for some reason.

I think a siamese should have a somewhat asian name! What were the cats called in disney’s 101 Dalmations? I favor Ming or Ling ling or a Chinese name that you could know the meaning of it.

Ava, Isodora, etc.

Good, good you guy’s…lots of creative fodder..maybe even start playing with combinations of many of your suggestions! Keep ‘em coming! :-)

Well…it looks as if I have chosen the name ‘Mia’ for this little one.

Just sort of evolved as it usually does.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and, it’s possible I may change my mind again, but for now..Mia is mine! ;-)

poofandmook's avatar

@aprilsimnel: It’s bad enough that your cat avatar is cuter than mine. If you couple it with “Mrowr” it makes it more cute and then we’re going to have to have a discussion ;)

Coloma's avatar

Funny you guy’s! @aprilsimnel @poofandmook

My new cat is going to be a real character, she already is doing the Siamese fetch thing with paper balls, and is soooo seductive in her affections, haha

Am I ready for the young cat ricocheting off the wall energy? Guess so!

Squee. Kitt-en.

All that kitten craziness is one of the main reasons why my last three cats have been young adults when I adopted them :)

You have a lot more patience than I.

But somebody has to give older ones a chance. Once a kitten is past 6 mos. old’ their chances for adoption drop sharply in shelters.

But they’re still cute (for life) just out of that fuzzy ball of perpetual energy stage.

Altho my newest one, Smoochie doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo on that yet. She still thinks I’m her chew toy. :D

How’s your older cat handling the little one? I’ve read that getting a kitten works better with an older cat since they perceive them as little and defenseless.

Coloma's avatar

@Buttonstc

Actually the new kitty is a teen, she is 10 months old, so while still playful she is not crazy wild, I didn’t really want to do the crazy kitten phase myself.

She has bursts of energy where she runs from room to room but only for about 30 seconds and then she just plops dwon on the floor and goes into mellow cat mode.

I am now allowing her out of her room ( while I am home a lot this week ) every hour or hour and a half for about 30 minutes or so and she is quite familiar with the house now.

Old man Gad is so-so, not happy but hasn’t left home either. haha
I have been putting him in my room to nap on the bed more and he has always slept with me at night, this will not be something the new cat is allowed to do until Gad is gone, fair is fair to the king, and she is not allowed in that room at all. He is getting frail and going more downhill in his condition, I am hoping he might last the year, but I don’t know.

I almost think I was led to this kitty because his time might be less than I had hoped for and by getting her it is an admission that I know his time is limited, a real mixed bag of emotion. :-/

Buttonstc's avatar

Yeah, I know what you mean. My Velvet whom I had for 18 yrs. developed a fast growing tumor a year ago.

I authorized the vet to give removing it a try in hopes it could give her some more time, but when he had her on the table it became obvious that because it was under her tongue, it couldn’t be done without amputating the tongue.

That’s no life for a cat who loved food as much as she did so I had to let her go.

But she did have the last three years of her life with me alone with no other cats (which is basically what she really wanted all along anyhow :)

I think your instincts are right on about giving him the sole privilege of sleeping with you for his remaining time.

I’m sure new kitty is thrilled enough with having a great home with love and good food rather than a shelter cage or life as a stray.
