My laptop touchpad isn't registering my commands very well, why?

Though this used to be only an occasional problem which I could solve by firmly pressing my finger into the touchpad for a moment, it is now persistent. I can’t drag the cursor very far across the screen in one stroke and sometimes does not even budge. I’ve cranked up the sensitivity and speed of the cursor, but both don’t really solve the problem. What can I do now?
