The best time to water outdoor plants is usually in late afternoon or evening. This saves water and the soil stays moister longer, in that less is lost to evaporation due to the warmth of the sun.

In addition…the leaves are not as apt to get burned. However, in some conditions, if you water at night you may encourage mold.

I usually water evenings unless I get behind and have to water to make up for a miss.

On very hot days it may be necessary to water am/pm if it’s up in the 100’s as it can get in my zone.

Generally if the temps are 80 or less I can go every other day, over 85 it must be daily, over 100 2x daily.

I’ve always heard and read that all plants, indoor or out, do best when watered after sunset and before sunrise.

Sunflowers are really easy to grow. Water once or twice a day. My plants get watered at least daily if it hasn’t rained. Twice a day if its 85degrees+ and the soil is dry. If its rained recently and the soil is still really moist don’t water. If you think they need an evening watering but the weather forecast is calling for a good rain that night don’t water them. The stalks and roots will get supersaturated and the hot summer sun is not out to draw the excess moisture out. This saturation makes for softer stalks and roots which make the plant more susceptible to wind damage and molds, fungus, and mildews of the roots.
