Credit card with the best cash back?

Asked by palbertq (258points) May 16th, 2010

Anyone know of a credit card with good cash back and/or other good incentive?
I’m still a student so money put on the card will be dining out, bars, grocery store, gas, and buying miscellaneous stuff online.

Right now I’m debating between:
Chase Freedom
-5% cash back in “popular categories”
-Right now “popular categories” is gas, department stores, and home improvement. I really don’t shop much at department stores or HI though.

Capitol One
-3% on gas and grocery
-Seems to be a lot of different banks offering same thing

Discover has one that sounds similar to the Chase one. Also need to consider if you want a Visa/MC or you are okay with AMEX/Discover which are not accepted everywhere. Seems like the latter has better deals but you kinda need one of the former in case the latter isn’t accepted. There is also the AMEX Blue card but there is a min spending amount you have to reach before you start getting 5% so probably not the best deal for you.

Might wanna check out this one:

Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Card for College Students

5% on groceries etc for 6 mo then 2% thereafter. Probably beats the others in the long run, for example, AMEX you only get 1% on the first 6k you spend in a year or something, and w/ Chase I can’t even tell if it is MC or Visa or how “popular categories” is really defined, CapOne I believe is “up to 3%” similar to AMEX Blue in that first 6k is only at 1%.

I don’t know how Citi’s customer service is nor how conservative they are in lending, esp since this is marketed towards students. I wouldn’t want another card with a limit under a grand.

The downside is that you only get cash back up to 15k spent ($300 limit) and they pay out in minimum $50 increments so you don’t get any cash back until you spend at least 2500.
