How can I safely attach a swing under my porch?

Asked by zookeeny (888points) May 17th, 2010

Im looking to attach a swing/ swing seat under my porch. It will be a swing for visiting younger family members but mainly a swinging large seat for me to daydream and read on. I will be getting a friend to attach it but I am wondering if attaching it to a beam over the porch will really be strong enough. Also as it is a rented place I am hoping to make minimum mess as the landlord will turn a blind eye if its not leaving the porch with big holes in the middle.

Has anyone done this or got any advice?

Thanks :)

This is kinda hard to answer without seeing some pictures.

Seek permission from your landlord first…ask them how THEY would like you to hang it. Then, you’re covered if you should move…with your deposit uncompromised.

It really depends on the thickness of the beams in the porch roof.

A porch swing must be hung from a beam, and not the ceiling. The ceiling will not hold the weight or the stress created by the swinging motion. What you need to hang one is a pair of hooks designed to hang a swing, and to drill pilot holes for the hooks, so the wood does not split when you install the hooks. The hooks need to be placed 2” to 4” farther apart than the length of the swing. Allow at least 4 feet clearance from the back wall or back edge of the porch.

When you move, you would take your swing with you but leave the hooks there for the next tennant.

We hung a porch swung in the method mentioned above, using 4” lag hooks it was able to support some very heavy people.

When you buy the S hooks that hold the chain make sure you read the weight capacity of the hooks. Even some that look strong are for decorative purpose only. You will need hooks that can hold about 400 LBS each. They will cost a little more but you will need them.
