Asked by mikey_ca (285points) May 18th, 2010

If you could switch bodies with anyone in the world, would you?

Details:
You switch bodies but keep your mind.
You could never return to your own body.
You can take on all the talent and memories of the person you switched with.
The person that you switch with goes to a better place :)
Your previous body also goes to a better place :)

So, would you do the switch?
If so, who would you switch with?

I’m good. You die at the end anyway.

No, I would have to buy all new clothes.

hmmmm… i don’t think I would switch with anyone. Maybe G. Love

I think I would switch bodies with my boyfriend. When I first contemplated this question it was before I had read the details. I kind of figured it would be a temporary switch and I was all in to try to understand what he deals with every day. Then I read the details… After some thought I still think I would trade with him. He has inhabited that body long enough, I would like to be willing to step up and give him a break, especially if he is guaranteed to go to a better place. Not to mention that I would love to know all the stories that guy has in his head and be gifted with his amazing spirituality and wisdom.

Nah, I wouldn’t. I’m perfectly fine with my body and I have no desire to be anyone else. Sure, there are a few people I’d like to switch with as a test maybe for a day (it would be really interesting to have a girl’s body), but nothing that I would want to be permanent.

“They” always want my body.

chyna's avatar

@ChazMaz Who is this “they” you talk of? :-)

Tom and Jerry

Could I save the option till I was decrepit and old? If so, then yes, I would swap into the first person around 18 years old that looked remotely like my original self.

I would clone myself first, then remove all imperfections (keeping my scars, though). It would be the ultimate fighting & seduction machine.

Then, I would switch to that body!

Yes, I’d switch bodies with Jessica Alba in a minute.

It’s difficult to narrow it down to one. Part of me wants to say Beyonce, so I can sing and shake my bum all day and generally look gorgeous.

Another part of me wants to say someone more athletic, like Paula Radcliffe. I would love to be that fit and run all those marathons. The trouble is though, if I had her body but still my own mind, her/my fitness would deteriorate extremely quickly. She/I would fast become a lazy slug.

Almost anyone. I’d probably draw the line at Rue Paul.

At 66, you betcha, baby. This body won’t last too much longer. I’d switch with a brilliant and beautiful young woman to get the chance to experience something from a totally different perspective.

Yeah, Aishwarya Rai, so long as I still get to be me.

How can you keep your own mind with someone else’s memories? Who you are is mostly a matter of your memory. This isn’t going to work, I’m afraid.

faye's avatar

Could I just go back to my younger self? That would make me very happy!!

ETpro's avatar

@Jeruba I would cherish doubling memories. For that reward, I would be most willing to let someone else’s memories impact my “I“ness.

eden2eve's avatar

Yeah, Angelina Jolie. I don’t need to explain why, do I?

jazmina88's avatar

Fergie. I could sing. and be married to that hot guy. Dumunel

jeanmay's avatar

@jazmina88 What is Dumunel?

shpadoinkle_sue's avatar

@jeanmay Fergie’s husband, Josh Duhamel. He is hot.

gemiwing's avatar

First I think- yes! Anything to get away from the pain, illness and the like. Then- no because I wouldn’t want to put this on anyone else. Wouldn’t be fair.

CMaz's avatar

@chyna – “They” come in the middle of the night. Standing over my bed.

GrumpyGram's avatar

I would consider switching with Jimmy Buffett.

chyna's avatar

@ChazMaz Boy are you lucky. I can’t get anyone to come to my house and stand over my bed or anywhere near it. :-(

CMaz's avatar

Leave a key under the doormat.

downtide's avatar

Hell, yes, I’d switch in a heartbeat. Not telling who with though.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Sure, I saw just the body the other night in a movie that I’d like to have and the sooner the better. Thanks!

@SuperMouse: A very interesting way to think about it. You sound like you really respect your man!! Nice.

@InspecterJones: I would probably do the same thing my friend, but I’d go for someone a bit better looking than myself, maybe a lot better looking than myself actually.

@ETpro: I agree that doubling memories would be quite the experience, pretty cool I think. I would still be myself if I didn’t loose my memories but only added to them…IMO.

It is nice to dream sometimes,

Stats Thus Far:

About 65% would make the swap

About 20% would reject the offer

The other 15% didn’t really give an answer

Cheers All!

@mikey_ca I find it fascinating to wonder what impact it might have on my own sense of self if I suddenly had all my own memories (including those about who I think I am) but could access a full set of someone else’s memories, including who they thought they were. Would the two of us have arguments within our head? Being it would be her head, and I am really the interloper, would she have veto power or would I?
