Can questions/answers not be edited after a certain point?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) May 19th, 2010

Someone gave me a “good answer” on one of my responses to a question… and when it came up on the margin I realized that I made a really stupid typo. Now I can’t fix it. Is that because it was already given a thumbs up?

I think you have about ten minutes to edit a question or answer. You can change a question once it has been answered, and you can edit an answer when you’ve been given a ‘great answer’.

Thanks for clearing that up.
That typo is going to drive me absolutely crazy now.

Don’t sweat it too much, @TheOnlyNeffie – we all have the odd tipo now and then.

;-)

@zenele , thanks! It was just one of those doozies that made the whole statement make no sense at all. I’m over it now, though. I really am. haha.

@TheOnlyNeffie No worries. In one of my recent questions, I gave a GA to a response, then refreshed the page and the answer was four times as long! Don’t worry about typos, if your spelling and grammar is generally good we’re happy.

@TheOnlyNeffie I do that all the time – type, proofread, post and then find an error after the edit time is over. If it really bothers me, I will make a new entry saying “Edit” and giving the correction. It does make me feel better. Others do this too.

@janbb I can see myself doing that. Thanks for the heads up, because even if my typos don’t particularly bother anyone else… a really good one can drive me up a wall. :)

@TheOnlyNeffie I know the feeling; it bothers the hell out of me.

Oh, now the whole question is missing. Go figure. lol. Well, either way, it’s good to know this stuff.

@TheOnlyNeffie you can always be a perfectonisht perfectionist and re-edit til you get it right. I do it up to 10 times if I don’t run out of time.
3rd edit—looks like your question went back for re-edit.
@FireMadeFlesh was it one of my answers?

There is a limit of 10 minutes for editing your questions or answers.

And questions never go missing. If they disappear, it means that a moderator has sent the question back to the asker to be edited. That asker will see a friendly bar on their screen that says “You have a question that needs editing!”, which they can click on to edit their question (beyond that 10 minute mark). There will be a little note from a moderator saying why they want the asker to edit their question.

If you have a real serious typo and the edit time has elapsed you can always PM a mod and ask him/her to fix it for you. They can do anything as the Fluther gods have entrusted them with buckets of magic pixie dust.

@anartist No it wasn’t. No guessing games please.

@Sarcasm Is that a ‘mod says’?
