Does the Quran make promises of virgins in the afterlife, and is this the only mainstream religion to do so?

Asked by beautifulbobby193 (1699points) May 20th, 2010

And what exactly must one do to earn them?

According to Wikipedia the all knowing, that belief comes from the Hadith rather than the Qur’an, and isn’t generally taken seriously by Muslims. The only ones who believe it literally then are the suicide bombers, who I believe only receive them if they die as a martyr.

@FireMadeFlesh Already found the answer, but I’m just going to add that you can’t earn this reward because it’s not freaking real…...

it is grapes, not virgins

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

@Blackberry Of course, but I would say the same for all religious rewards.

How, exactly, would it be heaven for the virgins who are given to these guys to be used?

whitenoise's avatar

How, exactly, would it be heaven to have to go through explaining to 40 inexperienced women, what a man wants?
for all I know these virgins may be in their late fifties as well

AstroChuck's avatar

And the question remains what happens to these virgins after they lose their virginity to a martyr?

Maybe that is actually the virgins’ hell and their Heaven is something entirely different – like a place with a good book, a dog and a comfy chair?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

You know, having 92 virgins is not my idea of heaven and I love women.

Trillian's avatar

Who says the virgins are female? Hell they could even be….never mind.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Trillian Listen, no one says but it is believed (wrongfully) that only males would want to be martyrs or should be martyrs and that only males will get the prize they desire most (women as objects) because the society that made up these beliefs was and is sexist. It is apparently progressive that there are female suicide bombers but alas, they don’t get the same perks…they just get to be ‘happy and free of jealousy’ – a good set to have when your husband is fucking the 92 virgins. here.

janbb's avatar

I was wondering what the female suicide bombers get!

Trillian's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I read it. Just kill me. It’s too deeply ingrained with far too many to even try to fight it. A woman who did just that has to be in protective custody because of the book she wrote. I just saw her on MSNBC this morning. She grew up Muslim and now speaks out against violence against women by Islam. Yeah, can’t remember her name at the moment. She had a co author who has already been killed. We should listen to what she has to say. If I could only remember her name. I need to go back to bed.

How can one sell a female suicide bomber on the act—a dozen stud-muffins?

beautifulbobby193's avatar

Many the whole virgin concept is so not to discourage those with tiny little rusty willies whom are used to being with women that laugh at them having been with big fellahs like me.

FutureMemory's avatar

Virgins are terrible bed partners. It would be so much more appealing if it was a promise of “72 horny non-virgins that think you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread”.

Draconess25's avatar

What happens when you run out of virgins?

Trillian's avatar

Does no one understand that this entire concept is based on selling an idea to people using on their lowest, basest desires? It tells us that having power over another is the most appealing, motivating factor for these people. This insight alone should be some help in dealing with them.

janbb's avatar

Do we really know that this is what is motivating the suicide bombers? I suspect not in all cases. I believe some feel they are acting for the betterment of their society or people.

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

@janbb I think this has nothing to do with their motivation. They are motivated by a malignant hatred of views opposed to theirs, and have combined it with a religious justification because conservative religions discourage doubt and questioning. People just focus on the 72 virgins because that is the facet that is most foreign and unappealing in our culture, so we can laugh at them rather than having to try to understand their point of view.

Sex as a reward from God for murder? Ludicrous

whitenoise's avatar

@Roby That is the way many animals are being rewarded.
(be it not by G/god, but rather by nature.)

people you talk about something you are totally ignorant of.!!!! in Islam,God promises that ’‘Absolutely yes’’ but it’s only on one condition if Muslim men enter’’ paradise’’.these virgin girls called ’’“Huriyah”

In Islam, the ḥūr or ḥūrīyah (Arabic: حورية‎) are described as ”(splendid)[1] companions of equal age (well-matched)”,[2] “lovely eyed”,[3] of “modest gaze”,[4] “voluptuous women”,[5] “pure beings” or “companions pure” of paradise, denoting humans and jinn who enter paradise after being recreated anew in the hereafter.[6]

The concept of 72 virgins in Islam refers to an aspect of paradise.it’s a Reward for the People of Heaven.

here’s what the Qur’an says about them :

“We have created [their Companions] of special creation, and made them virgin-pure [and undefiled after their old age in this life] (Qur’an, Surah Al-Waqia(56):35–36)

“And Hur (fair females) with wide lovely eyes. Like preserved pearls.”(Qur’an, Surah Al-Waqia(56):22)

“In these [gardens – paradise] will be mates of modest gaze, whom neither man nor invisible being [Jinn] will have touched them then [after they have been created again]

“We have created [their Companions] of special creation, and made them virgin-pure [and undefiled after their old age in this life] (Qur’an, Surah Al-Waqia(56):35–36)

Qur’anic description: The houri have variously been described as being “restraining their glances (chaste)”, “modest gaze”“wide and beautiful/lovely eyes”“like pearls”,“spouse”, “companions of equal age”, “splendid”[1] and much more besides.

LiLian's avatar

@Draconess25 in paradise, they don’t run out of virgins because after every sexual intercourse they return ’‘virgin’’ again.

LiLian's avatar

it really bothers me when i read answers like that.why do you make fun of an Islamic belief?
and by the way ,it is totally ’‘misconception’’ that suicide bombers go to heaven!!
because they committed suicide and in Islam ,anyone ’‘committed suicide’’ considered a non-believer.but i can’t say if he or she gonna go to hell or not because God only knows.

meagan's avatar

Where do they get all of these virgins from? Virgin Depot?

whitenoise's avatar

@LiLian Aren’t they also getting 80,000 or so obedient servants?

I think my main dislike of this concept is that Islam implicitly assumes that the greatest award can be control over others. 80,000 servants and 72 houri definitely stands for a hunger for power over others. My image of people that should go to heaven doesn’t match that of people that would like to have 72 houri and 80,000 servants at their dismissal.

I understand however that these numbers are not so exactly defined in Quran, but rather in additional scripture.

beautifulbobby193's avatar

@whitenoise I would love to have the 72 virgins and 80,000 servants but that shouldn’t mean I am a bad person or undeservant of a place in heaven, if there is one.

LiLian's avatar

@whitehouse you know that’s so ironic because all people in life wants power and fight for it!!!!! and in Islam,it doesn’t stand for hunger of power but it’s the wealth and the pleasures that they don’t have in life.the poorest Muslim in life could have all the wealth of this whole world and even doubled if he entered the paradise.it’s a reward for him because he was deprived of these pleasures.

i will give you example to simplify,
here in this world, most of ,men have erotic sexual desires and we hear a lot about men who have sex with many women ’‘whores and sluts’’.in Islam, any sexual intercourse without marriage considered ’‘adultery’’.so God knows that men have these sexual desires and He said to them if you stay patient and do goodness, you will have all these pleasures in heaven.God created them especially as a reward for them, got it now?
there is no show of control or anything.and by the way in Islam, once you entered the paradise God will take out of our heart all these negative feelings like jealousy, greed, love of power,hatred…........etc.simply you will become so pure :)

whitenoise's avatar

@LiLian
Don’t mistake my disagreeing with you for not understanding you.

I understand you.

I just think you are wrong and I am not overly impressed by the ethics of your beliefs.

whitenoise's avatar

@beautifulbobby193 It is not about whether you would like to have that or not.
Describing paradise this way, is implying that these houri and servants are something one would love to have more than anything else.

If that description fits you… well…

LiLian's avatar

@whitenoise okay whitenoise i just felt that you misunderstood something and i was just trying to ’‘clear things up’’.
may be you ’‘think’’ that I’m wrong but i ’‘believe’’ that I’m right, that’s it.
