What is it about the Arts and Music that reaches across time and cultures?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) May 20th, 2010

When you look across history and across the world, there is one constant, Art and Music. Music is part of the Arts but I think a big enough part to be addressed on its own. Why is that and what connects all of us to this. Cavemen drew on the walls, ancient cultures had music, and it just is such a part of life. What is it about three cords and rhythm? Unfortunately, I thought of one other constant, war. You can comment on that too if you’d like.

I think they both touch our human spirits, which exist independent of time.

Both art and music don’t require language, so they transfer better between cultures and are more lasting.

Excellent answers. I tried to give you more than one GA but it wouldn’t let me.

Art and music is a universal language that the world understands. you do not need to understand English, French or Spanish in order to marvel at the works of the Masters of the Art World. Rome is a prime example.

you can look and listen and just be there in the moment.

No long reading, just experience.

As John and Jaz said, art and music are universal and experiential. Regardless of your social status, race, religion, or language, they come across the same, and they come across now. Instant transmission of not just a song or a painting, but of a feeling. The fine arts have a wonderful and amazing ability to take a moment in time, an emotion, a message or a feeling, and make it tangible across all barriers. That is why they last, and that is why they are universal.
