Recommend modern comics, manga or graphic novels for 25 y.o male to try out? read for details please?

Asked by kutelilkat (279points) May 20th, 2010

I’m trying to surprise my boyfriend with some comics/graphic novels for his Bday. He has mentioned that he hasn’t read any since he was little and wants to get back into them. I’ve no clue where to start. He’s not into the classic stuff like superman /batman..unless its something really modern) I know he likes stuff like Sin City and Watchment. Please list manga as well (he has seen all the popular animes) Here are the themes he likes:

science fiction
adult/violence
mystery/crime
government
robots
assassins
ninjas
adventure

The Watchmen

It’s awesome, and a very good film has been made of it to boot!

edit

Balls. I just saw that bit about the stuff he already knows…

Oh my, there are so many that are out there now. I have a bookshelf full of them.
My recommendation is to go to your local comic book store and let them guide you. If you want a list, I’ll give you a list, but it will be long.

You can’t go wrong with Sandman, though. You might go to DC Vertigo. Good stuff there, but there are a lot of other very good companies.

@Rarebear…Hey, that’s a good idea. I think I will go to a comic store..maybe they can help. I’ll check out Vertigo as well. I’d appreciate a list if you feel like making one though :)

Okay, I’m not into Manga, so what I have is more regular graphic novel stuff

Sandman by Neil Gaiman
Watchman by Frank MIller
The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
Sin City by Frank Miller
V for Vendetta by Alan Moore
Y the Last Man (can’t remember the author)
Preacher (can’t remember the author)
All Star Batman and Robin by Frank Miller and Jim Lee
Batman: Hush (can’t remember the author—penciller Jim Lee)
Fax from Sarajevo by Joe Kubert
Maus by Art Spiegelman

and those are just the ones off the top of my head. There are loads of others.

Was this question modded? It was off for awhile and now it’s back on. The wording seems more or less the same
