Why is my hair turning white already?

Asked by AustieZ (366points) May 20th, 2010

Being a young, brown-haired boy from a long line of brown haired boys who’s hair stayed brown til the day they died, I’m a bit perplexed. Why would my hair suddenly be beginning to turn shock-white? It started as just one small patch, but now there are a few and they are growing. I’m not particularly worried, but definately confused.

Male pattern baldness comes from your mother’s side of the family, so perhaps prematurely gray hair does too?

Hmmm… May be something you’d want to talk to your doctor about. Sorry, but I don’t know what else to tell you!

Regardless of the cause, wear it with pride! Whether it’s Susan Sontag skunk hair or full-on Anderson Cooper, it distinguishes you from the common folk!

It could be environmental or genetic. Be sure to see your doctor to rule out any medical issues.

It happens sooner for some people! My aunt began getting gray hair when she was fourteen. It was really strange. Now her hair is completely salt and pepper.

I’m with @jaytkay on this.

some people’s pigment just runs out before others.. def is genetic, and that kind of thing comes from your mother’s father

The other day I found a gray beard hair… And I’m a freshman in college.

I didn’t get grey hair on top, if you know what I mean. Weird.

My hair came in white, first a tiny section right in front and then gradually widening, starting when I was 22. For many years it was just a narrow streak front and center, not more than an inch wide. It showed only when I combed it back. People thought I had paid to have it put in, but the roots were pure silvery white and never grew color again.

Turned out something similar happened to my paternal grandmother (my father’s mother) at a young age.

You need to mention this to your doctor. As @YARNLADY said, there can be medical reasons for this happening, although it could remain a benign mystery (like mine).

Like @Jeruba, people have asked me if I put my white patch there. I tried coloring it, but it doesn’t take color at all. I’ve found most people are really and truly fond of it. After you’re medically cleared, I hope you embrace it. :)

Yes, it happens sooner for some people and in most cases it’s perfectly normal.

After you have ruled out a medical problem, then relax and try to embrace it.
I had a lot of white hair in high school. The amount just about doubled every year.
There was a running joke/tease about me with the boys at school; who would find out if my “collars and cuffs” matched.

How about you @zenele ? so your collars and cuffs didn’t match?
