What's the point of a 3D television?

The new 3D tvs, do you need the glasses to watch regular tv? Is regular tv going to be in 3D? What is the attraction of watching everything in 3D?
Not everyone can watch 3D.
My mother got motion-sickness after 30 minutes of Avatar in 3D. I tried watching Coraline in 3D on DVD and it was really hard and that was in the dark. I understand the marketing part it, but what is it really here for? I know that’s a lot of little questions, but I’m not understanding why it exists.
