3 Week tour of 'Eastern Europe' where would you start?

Asked by OreetCocker (3562points) May 23rd, 2010

Am planning a 3 week tour of Eastern European countries next Summer. I have a vague idea of what I want to see and where I want to go. Am planning to drive it in a 1965 VW Camper and am aiming to finish by traveling on the Trans Siberian Express. Any suggestions about places that I may want to stop by? How would you do it and where would you start, finish and go in between?

I would see Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. There are some beautiful old cities; my grandfather grew up in Lithuania. You can google the countries for ideas.

Where are you picking up the Trans Siberian? Did you see Dr. Zivago?

@ gailcalled Great suggestions, have been to Estonia about 5 years ago and was blown away by the place. Every time I visit anywhere in Eastern Europe, I always want to pack up and move there! I saw a documentary a few years ago on how the Trans Siberian route was built and ever since have wanted to go. Ideally I’d get on in Moscow and travel through to Vladivostock making a few stops on the way, but that would take up a fair chunk of my 3 weeks!

Eastern Europe.. out of all the places you could go, why there?

Budapest is supposed to be gorgeous.

Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Krakow, Warsaw, Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn, St. Petersberg, Moscow, then you can get on the Trans-Siberian (go to Beijing!).
That’s just the big cities and you would want to stop a lot of places on the way.

Also, three weeks, what’s the point? You may as well just do one country.

@Melonking Architecture, culture, people! Have been obsessed with it since I was at school. A lot of people I went to school with were Polish, Ukranian, Russian and Hungarian and spending times with them and their families just made me want to! Have travelled to all the usual places with my kids when the were young and have made a resoultion to go somewhere different every time we go away :-)

@dpworkin Budapest is beautiful! Its made my shortlist of places to retire to!

@Melonking Would love to, but can convince my wife to spend 3 weeks in Russia! We’re doing Bulgaria this summer and Croatia in Autumn. I guess a road trip was kind of a compromise!

@The_Idler sorry, that last response was meant for you, guess I clicked the wrong link.

Prague is the most wonderful city I have ever visited.

I would start in Instanbul because of my interest in the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires in history.

@YARNLADY Although Istanbul/Byzantium/Constantinople would be incredible, it’s not a very sensible place to start a tour of Eastern Europe. Well, not if you only have 3 weeks.

You’d have to go through the Balkans, which means either wasting time just driving through the Balkans, or doing a tour of the Balkans… which you can do when you visit Bulgaria!

@OreetCocker Check out Constantinople when you’re in Bulgaria, it’s just over the border.

@YARNLADY Thinks that needs to be a holiday in itself from a geographic point of view :-)

@downtide Currently my favourite place on the planet!
