How can I watch a DVD on a DSi XL?

Asked by theichibun (2237points) May 23rd, 2010

A friend told me that she heard you can somehow make it so you can watch a DVD on a DSi XL. She just didn’t remember how you can do that, and since I don’t have a DSi to play around with to find out I thought I’d come ask you.

So, is this possible? And if so, what steps would I need to take to be able to watch a DVD on a DSi XL?

I’d assume you have to hack it so that it is capable of handling file systems and other programs (such as a DVD player), and then put the file from the DVD (which you would have to rip using a computer) onto a memory stick or card, then connect it to the DSIxL and play it using the hacked system.

I don’t have one, but that’s how the old DS’s were. If you don’t already have a hacked one, I wouldn’t.

I was actually looking at reviews for the DSi XL yesterday (I was thinking of getting one to replace my DS lite with a broken hinge). One very articulate and thorough reviewer mentioned that the DSi XL has no movie player. Perhaps, as @dverhey said, if you hacked it and put a ripped movie file on an SD card, you might be able to watch a movie.

That being said, the Wii does not typically play DVDs, but people have created a homebrew application that allows you to watch DVDs on a Wii. I wonder if there’s a HomeBrew channel for the DSi like there is for the Wii.

Be careful if you do decide to hack your DSi XL, though, as you run the risk of breaking it and voiding your warranty.

There might be some sort of homebrew app as both @ParaParaYukiko and @dverhey have stated, but be aware that if you connect to the internet with your DSi, what may seem like a harmless update to the firmware may actually include a patch for homebrew.
