Is this a known bug in Windows XP?

Asked by HungryGuy (16039points) May 23rd, 2010

Yesterday evening, the strangest thing happened. I noticed that the clock on my Windows task bar said 5:37 PM. It seemed later than that but I didn’t really think anything about it and forgot all about it. Some time later, I noticed that the clock still said 5:37 PM but had sort-of forgotten the previous time. It seemed way later than 5:30 and when I looked at a real clock, it was 9:30. I tried rebooting several times, but it wouldn’t reboot. No BSOD, just wouldn’t get past the Welcome to Windows screen. I thought, “Oh great! I gotta buy a new laptop, now!” This morning, it booted fine and has been running okay all day. I remember it ran Windows Update a few days ago. Does anyone know if this is a known bug, especially with whatever the latest MS update is?

I haven’t heard of this, but I am beginning to believe my friends who say the best windows update is to a Mac.

Actually, I prefer Ubuntu :-) But this particular laptop came with XP pre-installed, and I hear that laptops and Linux don’t always play nice together, and it’s nice to have a Windows machine around.

I’ve had a few XP boxes and an XP netbook and never run across that.

I’ve heard it said that the best Windows update is Hardy Heron, but that was a while ago ;)

@filmfann Don’t get me started. It isn’t so much Macs as it is Apple….

You might be having a battery prolem.

I’ve had no trouble with my XP machine. Several years ago I did have trouble right after running updates. If it’s OK now, I wouldn’t worry about it. Has the clock now corrected itself?

@dpworkin Are you referring to the CMOS battery?

My clock is practically never right (I’m on an XP machine, too), but I don’t think I’ve ever had a problem re-booting the computer itself.

@augustlan I generally set mine to sync up with NIST. Problem solved :)

@jerv Can you teach me how to do that?

jerv's avatar

@augustlan Which OS? Or you could just Google it :P

Thanks everybody! GA’s all around! On top of everything else, RoadRunner has been down since Monday and I haven’t been able to connect since Sunday.

@dpworkin, it’s an ancient laptop (running XP, after all), so you might be right about it being a battery issue.

@perspicacious, the clock is runnning sluggish, but it always has. The machine is under-powered CPU-wise (single core, 1.2 GHz), and the clock struggles to keep up, freezing then jumping ahead every few seconds. But it’s always done that.

@augustlan, the clock is normally accurate. It’s syncs with a time server once a day somehere. But even if the problem was with the time server, that still wouldn’t explain it just freezing for several hours.

Anyway, upon connecting tonight, Windows Update wants to install an update to resolve a clock issue involving a fix for Daylight Saving Time problems. Veddy suspicious!

In any case, I think it’s time for a new machine. I might stop into Worst Buy this weekend to see if they’re having any sales…
