Air conditioning will not turn on, is it electrical?

Asked by marialisa (464points) May 24th, 2010

I bought a new furnace this winter and had a set back thermostat installed. Now I can not get my air conditioner to turn on. I have changed the fuse on outside and checked the circuit breaker. What next? I think it’s electrical.

Pull the Thermostat off the wall and see if it is connected correctly to the AC switch. There should be no dangling wires, and the post labeled for the AC should have an attached wire.

@dpworkin
Green, white, blue, red wires, are all connected. No loose wires!

How about at the other end?

Edit: And do you have have a continuity tester? Maybe there is an “open”.

Dumb question, but are you sure you even have air coditioning with your new unit?

marialisa's avatar

@john65pennington I assumed a new furnace didnt mean I had to get a new a/c along with it…I am dumb about these things, yes!
@dpworkin ? The other end is where? Continuity tester?

dpworkin's avatar

Well the wires from your thermostat go to your furnace and to your AC switch. They have to be connected at both ends. A continuity tester is a device that makes sure there are no breaks in the wire – e.g. that the signal is going through.

Did you have a power outage?

marialisa's avatar

@dpworkin Can’t locate AC switch. What color wires are they?
@lillycoyote No

dpworkin's avatar

Well, you have green, white, red and blue wires, so it’s two of those four choices.

When all else fails, call the company that handled the furnace/thermostat installation and make them come back out and fix it free of charge. If they don’t want to, send them a drafted letter to the Better Business Bureau. If that fails, pray.

Check the breaker to be sure it has not tripped. If this is a new AC, it will not even come on if it is low on coolant gas (whatever the new stuff is called). I just had a whole new system installed and my air didn’t work. The AC guy found they had left a cap loose and the gas had escaped.

I could help you if i knew your set-up with the AC and furnace. I am assuming you have a programmable thermostat that is controlling both your heating and cooling unit and has a set temp that determines when each device would turn on or off that someone had to program i’m assuming, the problem may be with the programmed temperature settings themselves.

You didn’t give enough information for me to accurately help you, i’m assuming the AC and furnace are wired into the same thermostat since you mentioned that the AC stopped working when the new furnace was installed, and some people i know have this set-up in their own homes. If i’m wrong than is the AC hard-wired or on a plug going into an outlet and is there a switch that controls the outlet? I don’t have enough info on your set-up. I do know if your temp setting is to low it will not supply power to your switch so check your temp settings first.

I have to leave for work in an hour but will try to log back on later tonight to try to help you. P.S make sure your power is off before testing for continuity!

Check the breaker switch, and reset it. The contractor would have shut it off in order to do the work he needed to do. If that doesn’t solve the problem, call the contractor that installed it; anything you attempt to do on your own would void any warranty.

Thank you EVERYONE!
@dpworkin Persistance..
@krzdkanga…problem solved.
@Jabe73 I’ll remember you next time.
Furnace installer arrived today after waiting 2 days and opened up electrical part of furnace. The installer had connected ac wires wrong (and a fuse blew). Easy solution and no charge. Thanks.

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say it, but cool beans! If this gets modded I guess everyone will think I was mean to you.

marialisa's avatar

@dpworkin If you were mean to me, I would flag you…you were helpful…I have an 80 year old mom staying with me and air temp in home got to 90.6. AllI could do was wait and also bought $100.00 in fans. I had an idea it was furnace installers fault.

Why do you think you were mean? (The wire answer?) I deserved that! I couldnt see the connections to the electrical supply and didnt want to open cover to unit either. Thanks!

No, I just meant that saying “Cool Beans” in the General Section may have been considered off topic.

@dpworkin I had no idea about the difference of the Sections. I just read about it now
Also, how do you get an email everytime someone answers or comments? It is now 87.0 in my home.

I get emails when someone sends me a question. I really don’t know about other emails from Flutherbot. You can click on “Contact” and ask there, and a knowledgeable person will see your question.
