Why have neck tattoos recently become so popular among women?

Asked by Sakata (3347points) May 24th, 2010

Whether on the side of the neck or right behind the ear, woman seem to be flocking to get these tattoos done lately. Is there some celebrity behind this trend making it suddenly more popular, or is it just another random act of expression that a lot of people seem to embrace all at one?

Because it makes a statement.
Because it’s a trend.
Because the people with the tattoos are actually into art.

…I hope that link works…

I haven’t noticed this trend, but I guess it’s all coincidence.

Because it is a fashion statement.
Because people like to have what others have.

God only knows. How did high heels ever become popular?

partyparty's avatar

@CyanoticWasp Yes, why indeed LOLL?

Because most of people want to have things just because their in fashion, or a trend. For example: pink jacket which I may think is ugly but in fashion, I would maybe ware it just because others have it too

People want to stand out as an individual, just like everyone else.

High Heels were originally worn by men. Made it easier to stay in the stirrups while riding horseback.

To answer the question – because they never, ever want to be taken seriously during a job interview.

Couldn’t tell you. No problem in general with tattoos, but neck tattoos on anybody sort of creep me out

I don’t know, I’ve had my neck tattoo since umm, I think 2004..I can’t even remember.

I’ve had mine since 2007 and I got it done as a beginning of a geometric pattern (like Jadzia in DS 9).

@Simone_De_Beauvoir

Now, that’s pretty damned cool. Yay, Trills!

Yeah, I don’t know about it being new. I’ve known it to be popular with my queer ladies for about fifteen years now. Maybe it’s just hitting main stream ladies now? I’ve had mine since..hell..99 or 98.

We obviously travel in different circles. I personally don’t know of anyone with a neck tattoo or the desire to get one. I do know someone who has a butterfly and a flower on her boobs. Supposedly the butterfly can land on the flower but I have not had the opportunity to check it out.
She is considered bizarre.

Where do you live? This is not new. At all.

@Seek_Kolinahr I have so many tattoos in the works that that one has taken a back seat so far but it’s going to be awesome

I didn’t know it was popular, but I can imagine why someone (female or even male) would get something on their neck is so maybe they can hide it, but show it off when they simply put their hair up or pull it back?

Just throwing out a general idea.

poofandmook's avatar

I’ve had a tattoo on either side of my neck behind and below my ear for close to 10 years now… I wasn’t aware this was a new trend.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Kismet I’d say, given tattoos’ history and gang marks, men are more likely to get neck tattoos.

Because for some reason…..Women want to look and like Boogs!
