Does Superman breathe?

Asked by Supergirl (1696points) March 15th, 2008

My kids and I are having a debate——can Superman breathe underwater/hold his breath forever, or when he was in a nuclear explosion is he breathing that whole time while he saves the world?

Superman is superman for a reason. He can do anything. Kryptonite is his only weakness, and Lois Lane.

I agree with bulbatron9. He could probably hold his breath for as long as he wants, and will never get as blue as his suit. But he’d probably have to breathe around other people as Clark Kent, to appear normal, you know, and so he can do his super-breath. That air can’t come from nowhere; it kind of goes against the law of conservation of energy or some other conservation law.

Yes, Superman does indeed breathe. He needs oxygen just like a human being. In DC continuity, it has been explained that Supes can hold his breath for a really long time- but when the character was revamped in the 1980’s writers really started dealing with minor issues like that. Now he is often portrayed as needing an oxygen tank when in space or underwater for extended periods of time.
This was done because the character seemed to be a little TOO indestructible, and writers needed to make him a bit more vulnerable for the sake of good storytelling.

plain and simple, he can breathe only if the creators make him to.

It’s a little “disconcerting” that Superman can now be killed, not only by Kryptonite, but also from suffocation.
