Side effects to Advil and Aleve?

Asked by Debbie123 (26points) May 25th, 2010

Has anyone noticed a direct correlation of night-time hip pain to the taking of Advil or Aleve? I did see that unusual joint pain is an adverse event, but it must be unusual. But there is no doubt that if I go weeks or months without it and no pain, and then take two that day for a headache, I am tossing and turning that night with hip pain. Anyone else notice this? It took me a while to figure it out as I took more and more to get rid of pain and the pain got really, really bad and then disappeared immediately after stopping the medication.

Why not switch to Tylenol and compare? Aspirin and Advil, etc. are known to cause stomach bleeding and should always be taken with food or a little milk (to coat the lining of the esophagus and stomach before the pill slides down.)

In case, anyone else suggests I take Tylenol, I get a rash every time I take Tylenol. So, I’m stuck for headache relief? Any other suggestions?

Dark room, cold cloth over eyes, someone to massage pressure points on face and scalp, acupuncture? Are your headaches perhaps related to stress or something you’ve eaten?

There are really no other OTC headache meds.

Stress related headaches I think or from bad neck. I am going for MRA this week because staying still doesn’t help when i get a headache – it just gets so bad that I am forced to take something or I get migraine like symptoms with nausea, etc. By the way I’m a vegetarian – and did get headache problems from swiss cheese and pork when I used to eat it – so you are definately correct that headaches can be food related as well.

Gail – thanks for reminding me. Cold compresses to my neck took away by headache when a therapist used it. I completely forgot about that.

I find taking a prescription medicine called Fioricet helps me when I am starting to get one of my headaches that used to turn in to migraines. I haven’t had a fullblown migraine since I started using it but I don’t need it very often. As far as Aleve and Advil, I will take ibuprophen at night when I have hip or knee pain and I find they help me sleep.

I’m not a physician, and I don’t even play one on TV, but I believe that too much Aleve can cause liver damage. Personally, I stick with good ol’ aspirin.

Debbie123's avatar

My fall back is aspirin but I know alot of it isn’t good either. thank you!

@Primobabe too much of many meds will cause liver damage. Naproxen (Aleve) and aspirin are very closely related and have similar side effects so you’d best not take too much of that either although kidney damege is more likely (Tylenol is the one that is most famously linked with liver damage but if you follow the guidelines it is very safe so you shouldn’t worry about it).

I’ll ask doctor about Fioricet. I don’t get migraine – like headaches alot. But, find I must take something or it turns into nausea, etc.

I guess I’m the only one who gets joint pain from joint pain relievers!!

Yes, I believe in finding what works for you and using it. Not excessively, but when needed, the right med can be a lifesaver.

Enteric coated aspirin will help if you have any stomach problems.

I would not take it if you find you have those side effects, I completely believe you, especially if it happens every time you take it. I have the rare side effect of feeling like my chest is going to explode (severe pressure outwards) when I take Pepsid or Zantac. A person I know said she has a friend that has the same complaint, she is the only other person I have ever heard has this problem. People pop those drugs like candy.

Advil and Aleve are very different and it would be surprising if you experienced this with both meds.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@perspicacious ibuprofen and naproxen are both non steroidal anti inflamatory drugs (NSAID’s) and work in the same way and have similar side effects.

perspicacious's avatar

@Lightlyseared They are different in that if you cannot tolerate Celebrex or Vioxx, you cannot tolerate Aleve. Such am I. I can tolerate ibuprofen fine.

So you are sugesting that what is true for you is true for the rest of the human race?

I am suggesting that I am not special.
