Why has my finger gone numb?

Asked by grumpyfish (6657points) May 26th, 2010

As of around noon today, my middle finger on my left hand is numb. Just to the left of the nail, and only up around the nail.

No response to touch or pressure, no response to pain (although can get pain out of it deeper in, just not on the surface). It’s numb, not tingly.

I did spend about 4 hours dragging a rototiller around before this happened, and I’m curious if this had anything to do with it.

Any ideas, flutherers?

Sounds like a very localized peripheral neuropathy, possibly relating to overuse (as you suspect).

@shilolo Thanks! Makes sense.

I suspect, from the location, that my wedding ring was digging into that finger (and then being vibrated against the nerve for a few hours). I’ll leave my wedding ring off and take it easy the next 24 hours and see if it gets better.

@shilolo Yup. I agree.

The tip of my left index finger got numb recently….not totally, but enough for it to feel annoying. I had done nothing that I knew of to cause it. I have used a chiropractor for years, so I went to her. She adjusted my neck and the finger was fine immediately. Pinched nerve in my neck.

@grumpyfish tip of my pinky finger is numb…just the tip! Been that way for a couple of weeks now. Maybe @shilolo has the answer. But, having said that, I’ve a bad neck…could be that.

Do you have any back problems or neck problems @grumpyfish ?

@BoBo1946 No back or neck problems, although my back muscles are a bit sore from the work this morning. If it keeps up I may try @plethora ‘s suggestion

@grumpyfish well, @plethora may have something for all of us…...might visit my “neck cracker!”
