How can I decide which school is best?

Asked by Bobby42 (102points) May 27th, 2010

I am a transfer student from North Dakota State University. I am originally from Minnesota and I realized after spending a year at NDSU that it was not for me. It was too small town, and I didn’t like walking out of my dorm and smelling cows. Beautiful campus but not for me. I also wanted to come closer to home so I chose two different schools to apply to Winona State, and University of Minnesota twin cities. Both are incredibly different and now I find myself debating on which one I want to attend. Winona is small 8500 students NDSU was 14000 ish and that was something I enjoyed about the school however, the U is the 3rd largest school in the country approx 52,000 what I like about that is I feel like I would have more opportunities, and if I decide to go premed route it would be a good school to do my undergrad at. Both schools are decently close to my home so I like that, the U has better sororities which in the end doesn’t really matter but that was something I was interested in getting into….So my question: Obviously you cannot decide for me, but if any of you had to debate this how would decide or how did you decide? The first time I chose a college I picked it for a boy…this time I am picking it for me so this is really important. Just help me out, if you know anything about the schools that would help too. Thanks all!

Have you toured the campuses and the programs you’re interested in? Call the admissions offices and see if you can go on a student-led tour. That’s a great way to get a feel for academic and social life.

Will both schools accept your tranfser credits from NDSU equally?

Try to meet the professors who lead the major you’re interested in, and see if the two schools approach teaching differently.

List the things that you want in a college and then rank the two colleges for those things.

It sounds from what you have written that you are leaning toward the larger school. Why hold back? Go for it.

If there is not a specific major you are interested in that might help you choose, I say go for the big school. I transferred to Michigan State University (around 45,000 students at the time I think) and I loved it. I was very reluctant because I was not a party girl, and it was known as a party school, and I was not sure what living on campus would be like, but it turned out to be fantastic, and I try to nudge my neice and nephew to go to big schools with big campus life.

Go to the school that will give you the best degree and opportunity for your career choice and that’s it…end of decision process.

I would add think hard about the sorority as that will add a distraction to your school work load but you will have a blast if you do. Pick one that has a strong alumni base and an emphasis either on your degree or your social morals. I joined a frat (Sigma Chi) in college and I still a whole slew of my frat bros’s a couple times a year and the networking opportunities with them has been a major benefit and more so than what my degree ever did for me. In fact I will see 40 of the mad men this Sunday at a big bash!

First of all, you need to find the details about the school, check previous records and alumni base.
