Tips for furniture delivery?

Asked by nickbaum (49points) May 28th, 2010

I’m getting a desk delivered from Crate&Barrel and a mattress from SleepTrain. Do I tip the delivery folks, and if so how much?

Yes. if you tip the pizza delivery person, then i would tip the furniture deliverer. two or three dollars, since they are paid by a salary.

Tip the guy only AFTER you have had a thorough exam of your furniture. I once tipped delivery men for bedroom and living room furniture, only to discover that they dented a piece, and failed to deliver one other item on the list.

If you are satisfied, I’m guessing $10 per individual?

Ice water is a nice gesture too, per @john65pennington, if it takes them a while to haul it in or it is hot outside.

If you don’t have the money, don’t tip but offer the water or a soda (whatever you have handy).

$10–20 per person, depending on how much stuff there is, but that’s NYC.

One of my roomies manages guys at a moving company, and he’s told me before that that’s the standard here.

I usually would tip fruniture delivery people about $5 each. (I’m not in NYC.)

Before you do any tipping and depending on how much you paid to have it delivered.

Look over it carefully and completely before they leave. Not necessary because of what they might have done. But how it could have left the warehouse.

Thanks for all the replies! Based on some other links, I ended up offering them some cold drinks, which they seemed happy for.

Oh, great. You’re supposed to TIP them after you’ve paid for delivery??

perspicacious's avatar

Sure, you can always tip. I have only tipped delivery persons once and that was because they actually helped my father in law load something into his truck while they were here. Another time, I asked them to move some furniture from one floor to another while they were here, and gave them three pieces of furniture. We were all very happy about that.

I’ve always offered drinks and a $10. or $15. tip per person, no horror stories of damaged good yet.

@GrumpyGram Yes, a tip, usually $5 per person, is a nice gesture. The money you pay for delivery does not go to the delivery person, it goes to the company. The delivery person only gets salary, and it’s usually minimum wage.
