What intrigues people to listen to screaming metal?

Asked by noohac (104points) June 2nd, 2010

I understand all other types of music and why people listening to them ( inspiration, self relation, emotional needs) But I can’t understand why people listen to music they can not understand. Especially since the titles often refer to bodily excrement or other similarly disturbing or gory themes.

Probably because they like it and like the “energy.” I’m sure a few of them wonder how anyone can listen to slow chamber music with German titles they can’t even pronounce.

It’s all a matter of taste, and taste is individual.

Thank you for your input @mrentropy but I guess I am asking why they enjoy the crude lyrics the energy I can understand but there are many genres that offer that.

For a better understanding the lyrics on this site give a excellent example of the type of music I am referring to. http://www.darklyrics.com/c/cannibalcorpse.html

Because they’re amazed at how the singer’s throat doesn’t explode out of their throats after each song.

For bands like Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel I think a lot of it has to do with the pure “grossness” factor. A dash of rebellion, too. I don’t mind the music, some of it I find to be pretty funny in an over the top kind of way. It’s not my music of choice.

@erichw1504 I used to joke around with a friend of mine who listened to that kind of music. I said that anyone could do it and then I would spout nonsense in a loud, deep, voice. It actually sounded pretty good, but my throat was pretty sore after. It wasn’t even a whole “song.” So, I’m amazed too.

@noohac Not all metal bands have lyrics like the ones you just posted in your link. That being said, a lot of metal definitely explores the darker, more obscure side of human nature. Part of that is rebellion, like @mrentropy mentioned, and I suspect the shock factor is also important. Anti-mainstream, so to speak. A lot of times, when a metal band becomes popular in the mainstream, its core fans turn away from them because they ‘sold out’ (like metallica). Metal is not for everyone, and die-hard metal fans would like to keep it that way.

I never pay attention to the lyrics. If I’m listening to a metal song, be it classic, death, thrash, speed, whatever, it’s usually for the shredding.

It’s all about the energy and power that comes from it. It’s motivating for working out, fast driving etc.

I feel that music is more than just the lyrics. I like thrashy stuff because it’s so full of energy and helps me out when I’m upset. Above that, I just think it sounds good. It’s just what we like. And I’ve never heard any metal songs that sing about excrement. O_o

and if you know of one, i’d rather not hear it anyway
