I've been inspired to start studying classical Greek again. Have you been inspired recently?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37344points) June 3rd, 2010

I bought a beautiful book, Nox by Anne Carson, last weekend. She is a scholar and translator of classical languages. It inspired me to take up classical Greek again, so I’m starting with a simple textbook. I hope to be reading passages out of great classical literature by the end of the year.

Have you been inspired recently to either take up something new or return to a pasttime you quit some time ago?

If yes, tell us about it.

If not, what would it take to inspire you?

I am inspired to learn some spanish because I get to go to Chichen Itsa in the fall. And I am inspired by planting, growing, and harvesting plants so summer is my time. I just ordered more because spring plants and bushes are on sale.

Yes, actually. I’m beginning to become more interested in picking up my writing again. It’s been a long time. I was watching Burn Notice earlier (awesome episode) and it made me itch to get back to work. To create the twists and turns, build characters and have the magical ability to give people a great ride hur hur, sorry.

@hawaii jake: I tried learning classical Greek when I was enduring chemo and radiation. The book was enormous. I memorized the alphabet, the accents, the diphthongs and the present tense of “to teach.” Then I began counting the other inflected endings of said verb. When I got to over 240 (including participles), I στοππεδ.

When you say “again,” I assume that you have some experience and thus a leg up.

@gailcalled : That’s a wonderful story, not the chemo and radiation part, but the counting. My leg up consists of having bought a small textbook some years ago and memorized the alphabet, etc., like you. I did buy a very good lexicon, so I figure I’ll be using it a lot for those myriad endings.

I’m sure it will happen just any day now.
