Kwanzen Cherry with dying branches. Prune?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) June 4th, 2010

I have a young (9years) kwanzen cherry tree that suddenly has once healthy branches whithering and dying. It started out with one branch that I pruned to the trunk. Now I have three more. I sprayed for borers and will prune these branches. The rest of the tree appears healthy and I will have the arborist come and look at it. Has anyone else had something like this happen?

I found this; Kwanzan cherry tree care.

There may be some bacterial or fungal infection. My flowering cherries get no attention and do brilliantly.

majorrich: Just a side point; but when you pruned the diseased branch did you sharpen and disinfect your cutting tools? If you didn’t, then you may have inadvertently spread any infection that gailcalled mentioned, if that was the problem. I hope this helps. Please ignore if it doesn’t.

Andreas.

Ruh Roh. The arborist came by and says it looks not real serious but to cut the dead branches (remember to Sterilize.) He also mentioned the tree seems a little stunted. It is not grafted to another brand of cherry so may be sensitive to other diseases. Not sure what he meant, but he said he would keep an eye on it.
