How does he find out when he leaves for Airborne school?

A wild guess: since it is a military thing, it could be that that information is classified.

It is very likely that he and/or the people in charge do not know the exact date. You are going to have to err on the side of caution.

Exact dates aren’t given until their orders are written. Sometimes orders are given months in advance, other times they are given a week before the date, it really depends on when the class is going to happen and what’d going on with the current class. Sometimes dates get moved around and changed quite a bit. If you decide to book a ticket to go see him, make sure you get one that will allow you to change the dates if necessary. That way you don’t lose out on your money or ticket if something happens.

The dates of the schools are set many months in advance. He should get his exact orders at least 30 days in advance, so he should know in 3 weeks or so.
