I need a good brand of protective sunscreen got any ideas?

Asked by shego (11093points) June 11th, 2010

I used the Coppertone sport SPF 50, yesterday, and I reapplied it liberally several times. But I still managed to get burned really bad.
So my question is, does anybody know any good sunscreen, that will help prevent me from getting burned?

Neutrogena has some nice products, but I don’t know about longevity, if that’s what you’re asking. I have melasma, and so have to avoid the sun like a vampire. I use something called Anthelios, it seems to be one of the best rated for protection by dermatologists.

What you used should have done the trick. My question is, was it expired? Because sunscreen bottles don’t have a date many people think they don’t expire when they really do. I never used sunscreen from last year. If you bought this last year, it may be bad. If you bought it at a small gift shop, it may be bad. Always purchase from a large retail shop like Walgreens or Target.

To really answer the brand question, I use Bullfrog or Banana Boat. Both are good brands and anything over SPF 50 is nonsense. 50 is plenty.

@missingbite I bought it at target about a week ago, so I don’t think it is expired.

That’s good. Are you very light skinned. My GF is a red head with fair skin and she burns really easily. We use Bullfrog Surfer formula found here. It works great. The SPF is lower than 50 but it works for her.

Nope I’m not light skinned I guess I sit in the olive toned area, but I have never really been burned when using sunscreen. I’ve been using that brand forever. Maybe they changed some of the ingredients.

Could be. That is a strange one. I guess now it’s up to Aloe and time. Good luck with the sunburn.

For long lasting wear (3+ hours), I go with Bullfrog, but the cream one not the gel that someone posted above.

For every day wear where reapplying is possible, I go with one with less chemicals.

My lady was the fair red haired Celtic type. About all she could do was use Neutrogena SFP 50 and limit sun exposure to no more than 15 minutes, followed by a liberal coating of aloe gel.

Some medications, especially for acne and other skin conditions can make you much more sensitive to the sun no matter how much sunscreen you apply. Just a thought…
