Does anyone know what this error message means and how to fix it?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) June 14th, 2010

My laptop was fine yesterday until this morning I turned it on. Every time I clicked on anything that had to do with getting online like a internet browser, online game, or instant messenger had an error message that pops up.
“The application has failed to start because it’s side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.”

What’s this mean and how do I fix this?

EDIT The error message pops up any time I click on any type of program

If it’s at all possible you may want to try re-installing the .Net framework. That may help. Can you run any installers? Like the installer for Firefox or Chrome?

Nothing at all. Not mozilla, not google chrome, internet explorer, any games, etc.

The installers? Not the already installed program.
Or, you may have to give up entirely and try installing these:

For 32-bit systems:
Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) – Service Pack 1

For 64-bit systems:
Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x64) – Service Pack 1

When I installed it…and ran it…that same message popped up :(

What did you install? What did you run?

So, you ran the install for the 64-bit Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package?
Did the install give you the error, or did it install and your other programs still didn’t work?

The install gave me the same error message and the other programs still won’t work (same error message)

Well, that’s a problem. As near as I can tell, re-installing the VC is the way to fix this.

How do I do that?
