How do I modify my IP adress?

Asked by Anatelostaxus (1428points) June 17th, 2010

I’m obviously not an expert in the field.
I’d like to know if there’s a way to edit IP adresses so to be ‘protected’ whilst connecting to the web via a PUBLIC / PRIVATE but unprotected WiFi.
Appearantly I’ve just got a signal ( quite strong it seems) and was tapped in to it automatically.
I assume it is a private WiFi ( as in individual and not belonging to a company ) . Possibly a network here in the neighbourhood.

What you want to do is hide your computer from web?

If ‘Yes’ then what you are looking for is not changing your IP but firewall. IP will be auto-assigned by most of the wifi routers.

I think you are looking to browse anonymously. Try a proxy site like www.hidemyass.com

I tink that’s the site…

Google for a shell account somewhere on the internet, like here http://tinyurl.com/2u249zj, and then use MyEnTunnel http://tinyurl.com/lcxpwc and a browser proxy http://tinyurl.com/z2sfp to route traffic through the secure tunnel. If you’re on mac or linux you can just type ssh -D portnum user@host then point your proxy to it.

A paid but awesome alternative to using the browser proxy is Proxifier http://tinyurl.com/c72qe5 which will take your socks tunnel you made with a shell account and proxy ALL connections (i.e. including dns lookups) via the tunnel. This will encrypt all traffic including other programs outside the browser (i.e. chat programs). If you’re going to be permanently on an insecure wifi connection, this is your best option.
