How can I help my lips from swelling because of the weather?

Asked by shpadoinkle_sue (7188points) June 17th, 2010

It is now driving me crazy. I know it’s the weather because I’m not allergic to anything.

The weather is cloudy. Not rainy or muggy, just cloudy. This is, however, the third day straight SW washington and the Portland Metro area have had record highs and lows. The pressure is fine. I am getting over a cold, but it’s near the end.
I’ve been using a cold rag and it works if I keep it there. But as soon as I take it away, it comes right back to being swollen. It’s the top and bottom lip. I put mosturizer on it and it does do anything and chapstick only burns a little at first, but doesn’t stay. Help, please.

Chapstick burns? Maybe you are allergic to the chapstick. I say use vaseline. I don’t think your weather theory makes sense. Were you in the sun recently? When lips get a sunburn they are swollen and red. It is difficult to know it is from sun exposure unless you specifically remember or realize that it happened after being in the sun. Always wear sun protection on your lips or lipstick. Meanwhile, we still are not 100% sure what it is. How long has this been going on?

I just noticed you said you are getting over a cold. Are your lips chapped and dry?

I’ve been using chapstick for awhile now. It’s hasn’t been sunny since Saturday and I was inside most of the day. It’s only be going on for about the last 36 hours. They’re smooth and a little dry. I’ve been drinking a lot of water, so it’s not dehydration. Thanks for mentioning the sunscreen, I should wear it a bit more often.

@py_sue I say they are dry because since you had a cold you have been breathing through your mouth a lot. Vaseline will do the trick best, if I am right. Lipstick second best. Not lipgloss. You need a regular lipstick, not one of those ones that have longer colorstay. And, very important don’t lick your lips. I promise if I am right, and you make sure you put it on before you go to bed tonight, you will feel better in the morning. I hope I am right.

Okay. Thanks. I just tried honey and that didn’t do anything either. I don’t think I have any vaseline, but I’ve got some mentholatum. I’ll try the lipstick. I had a really nasty experience once in 8th grade. Couldn’t eat for two days because my lips were so chapped. Thanks so much.

try chapex

Lipstick has oils in it. Put it on a little thick. Choose one that is moisturizing, Clinique tends to be good. Get in the habit of wearing lipstick to bed and it won’t happen again. Let me know if you feel better tomorrow :) Good luck.

If you are awake oil might work? I’ve never done that, but I don’t think I have ever been as bad as your situation. Oil will come off easily, so I don’t think it is good for sleeping, but for right now maybe just take some oil from your pantry and put it on your lips for a few hours. I don’t know what time zone you are in, if it is near your bedtime.

It’s about 11 pm right now. I thought I’d check before I went to bed. I use covergirl mostly. I’ve got some old estee lauder on hand.

@py_sue Just pick one that is smooth. Avoid the ones that stay on for a long time, they are dry.

I’m curious if the lipstick worked. If not, you might want to go be seen. I know you said you aren’t allergic to anything, but it is possible to develop a sensitivity to things over time. So you could be in the process of developing a sensitivity to something and this is your body’s way of telling you about it.

The best thing for sore lips, I’ve had, is Carmex, but that’s when my lips have been chapped. Have a read through of this. Lip swelling can be caused by many many things.

I want to know if it helped any also.

I agree you might be developing an allergy or sensitivity, but if it started when you caught your cold, then most likley it is from being sick.

Okey dokey. After last night, I’m not sure if the lipstick worked or not. My lips were the same color. I was getting some splotching around my mouth after the damp rag, but that’s pretty much gone now. I used mentholatum. They’re still a bit swollen, like I got collegen injections. I’ll run to the store and get some carmex today and see if that helps.

By the way, water will dry your lips, that is why people are told not to lick their lips. So if you use a wet rag and then the water evaporates off of your lips it will dry them.

Dammit, that was the only thing that was keeping me sane. I haven’t been licking them. I had this happen when I went to the east coast for a school trip in the 8th grade. I didn’t know what was going on. I woke up one morning and they were so bad I couldn’t open my mouth to eat for about a day and a half. That is why I don’t lick my lips and my chapstick is usually with me.

Chapstick does nothing for me. The lick, or water is a temporary feel better, that makes things worse. ou are still keeping plenty of lipstick on your lips right? Did you buy some of that other stuff people mentioned or vaseline?

shpadoinkle_sue's avatar

I bought some blistex, which didn’t really work. The swelling has gone down, maybe 40 percent or so. Not as bad as last night. I did try oatmeal and that kinda helped the swelling and definately felt good. But I couldn’t keep it on there. :) I’m going to keep up with the mentholatum and see how tomorrow looks.
