How could I make homemade aromatheraphy?

Asked by Your_Majesty (8235points) June 23rd, 2010

I have been using aromatherapy for quite a long time for my daily lifestyle and part of my yoga ritual. I use some variety of aromatherapy that I bought from beauty center(quite expensive) and I also bought a book about how to use aromatherapy. I want to make my own aromatherapy but I just don’t know how to do it or what equipment be necessary. I would like to use general ingredients like orange skin, lemon skin, mint, etc for starter. So I want to know if you have any idea/suggestion about how to make homemade aromatherapy,it would be very appreciated here. Thank you.

@partyparty Thanks for that but it only shows you how to use and blend different type of aromatherapy to create a new one(mixture). I don’t see there’s a method to create your own.

Start a garden. Plants like mint or lavender are very simple to grow and like to propagate rapidly.

I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking. Do you want to know how to collect essential oils?

@TheOnlyNeffie That’s exactly what I want to know!(I want to know how to extract oil from plant. I might have misled others with the way I worded this question and I feel sorry about that) I don’t plant my ingredients but I buy them from local market(It will require a lot of time and other requirements to grow them). I’m still working on how/should I get that distillation machine or there could be another cheaper more traditional method to extract plant.

Just to add to the great link from @TheOnlyNeffie , Build your own oil distillery

This might help. Though, I’ve heard (and this link appears to confirm) that it takes much longer to make your own without a still. Could be fun though, and perhaps you could continue to buy the oils you need until your own collection is ready? Hope this helps.

@gemiwing Thank you! I’m not that handy but I’ll see if I could do that.

@TheOnlyNeffie Thank you for your adds! That really helps me a lot. Time for experimenting!

I went out to the garden yesterday and put all the fading rose petal on a plate and put them at our inside entry. Sometimes when the petals are dry I put them in lace pouches and put them anywhere.
Buy a couple of tiny dropper bottles and some almond oil to use as a base oil and buy the essence oil you like and put a few drops in. Easy quick :-) What aromas to use? If you do not like it do not use it. You will like the ones you enjoy or require.
If you like to spend money and time you can distill but you might enjoy that as a hobby as well.

@Doctor_D Do you want to start distilling your own or using some proper essential oils? I’m a soap maker who uses essential oils etc.., so perhaps I can help a bit? Fragrances are very personal. There is ALOT to learn about chemistry and botanical science, but it can be done if you want to start distilling your own. Send me a message.

Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of plant-derived, aromatic essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being. It is sometimes used in combination with massage and other therapeutic techniques as part of a holistic treatment approach.
As cited In The Free Dictionary

(It takes a great deal of plant material to produce essential oil.)

you might want to start with just steam distillation first….

Get a set up like this and you’re on your way.
