Applying for Disibility and I got denied, what should I do?

Asked by xStarlightx (416points) June 23rd, 2010

So about six or so months ago I applied for disability and I got denied. I feel that I shouldn’t have gotten denied and that I should have some kind of power.

My mom told me I should get a lawyer and go about it that way but I’m not sure because that takes a long time to get done.

What do you guys think?

It’s my understanding that the process of applying for disability is a long and convoluted one. I suspect that your best chance for a finding in you favor will involve a lawyer who specializes in such cases.

you have 60 days to appeal.

Get a lawyer and find a doctor that’s willing to help prove you actually need it. Without both of those things, there won’t be much you can do, since so many people abuse the system already.

@DrasticDreamer Yeah a lot of people do abuse it and it pisses me off like crazy.

You need a lawyer, and you need a doctor. Yes, it takes a long time. That’s the nature of the system. Almost NO ONE gets approved the first time. Most don’t even make the first appeal! It’s set up to discourage people who don’t really need it.

On the upside, you can get retroactive payments from the time of your first application, and sometimes from the date your disability began. That can be a nice lump sum.

You can also apply again.
