Can my cassette tapes be transferred to digital?
Is it worth doing, quality-wise, expense-wise? I’m not too picky about the sound quality anyway. As cassettes, they are basically worthless, but I’d love to preserve the content.

And regarding quality and expense:
Quality = the MP3s will sound as good (or bad) as your cassettes.
Expense – I’m a do-it-myself guy, so I think of time and effort – it’s pretty tedious. I do not know what people charge for the service.

IMO – don’t waste your time.
1.) The sound quality will be for crap.
2.) The sound quality will be for crap.
3.) It is a pain in the ass effort that will result in crappy sounding music.
If you purchased a legal copy, go ahead and download Vuze and access the BitTorrent network and find yourself a clean digital copy.
If you have recordings that are truly obscure, or personal band recordings or something, use a high quality cassette player (even borrow one if you can) and a decent video card or USB digi converter.
TOTALLY agree with @ipso , I work at a TV station, with access to some of the best equipment out there, but still – garbage in, garbage out. I “successfully” did a few but stopped because I never listen to ‘em again in CD form.
When you download Vuse, put in the search window (for example) “Elton John @ 320 kbps” and you’ll have a good sounding digital download.
