This is my trip itinerary to Australia, what do you think?

Asked by RexCredo (142points) June 24th, 2010

I’ll be in Australia for 11 days and I already built an itinerary. Since I have two extra days I’m not contemplating I would like to get some opinions where else should I spend them, should be near any of the places I already have. I’ve never been in Australia so, do you think I’m visiting the right places or would you suggest different.

ITINERARY:

Sydney (2days) – Blue Mountain (1 day) – Wollongong (1 day) -Melbourne (2 days) – Great Ocean Road (from Torquay to Allansford) (2 days) – Mount Gambier (1 day)

@RexCredo It looks like you have it all worked out fine. I would suggest you stay a little longer at these places to cut travelling time. That’s always the big killer in Australia. I live on the west coast (Western Australia) and these places are on the east coast and into South Australia. I can’t give you anymore tips than that, as I’ve never been to these places.

Enjoy your stay and Welcome.

Looks good! How do you plan to get from Wollongong to Melbourne? As @Andreas said, travelling times are the real potential killer.

@FireMadeFlesh I’ll drive back from Wollongong to Sydney and then I’ll take a flight to Melbourne.

Do you guys think there’s something I’m missing somewhere near the places I’m mentioning that is worth seeing and I could probably drive to? Just in case I find the time. Probably between Mount Gambier and Melbourne, to which I’ll go back driving to the airport.

@RexCredo Sounds good. The Great Ocean Road is scattered with tourist attractions. The classic tourist destinations along there are London Bridge, and The Twelve Apostles, which are worth a look. Torquay has held world class surfing contests, so it has great beaches (although being winter you may not want to venture into the water), and it is a nice little town too. I went sea kayaking in Anglesea once, which I would also recommend if it were warmer.

Man, only 11 days. I was there for 6 weeks and I still felt that I hadn’t seen enough, though I managed to get in a few days in the Hunter Valley wine country. If 11 days is all the time you have, the itinerary is fine.

Wollongong is ok… do you have family there?
Otherwise you could go into sydney and go to surry hills or bondi beach – if you like markets there are great ones in surry hills and bondi… wollongong is like a big suburban town… not much to do there, however they do have an amazing female only buddhist temple!

Sounds like it will be fun though!
colder around this time so take a warm jacket just in case

If you want to spend more time near to where you’ll be, go to Kiama. It is only 25km south of Wollongong, and easily accessible by car or train. There is lots to do around there, and it is a beautiful place. You are mostly visiting the right places- I’m not a fan of Melbourne, but I am biased being a Sydney native. Plenty of people do like it. You haven’t mentioned when you are coming. If it is in the next couple of months, expect the Blue Mountains to be wet and very cold. While there, make sure you see Wentworth Falls. The walk there takes about 4 hours, but is well worth it.

Have a great time, and welcome to God’s own country.

If you only got 11 days in Australia, i would not spend a day in Wollongong or Mount Gambier. I would consider stopping a day in Canberra instead and having been to the capital of Australia, even though most Aussies would not agree with the choice of Canberra :-)

Near-by is also Kosciuszko National Park – the highest mountain in Australia; and while in Victoria, you could visit Phillip Island to see the famous penguins.

If you were a real goer and wanted to get more in, you could even consider proceeding to Adelaide and visiting Barossa Valley – another famous thing to do instead of Wollongong and Mount Gambier.
