Does the shipping and handling from ebay cost alot?

Asked by fightfightfight (601points) June 24th, 2010

I was going to buy a sword and daggers from ebay within the price range of 10.00–20.00$, so I just wanted to know if the s&h would be pricey.

With a few exceptions, shipping is determined by the seller. Considering the sword will be an oddly-shaped package, I’d expect shipping to be on the pricey side. A quick search showed a rough average of $50 for UPS shipping, though I did see a few items with free shipping offered.

Ask the seller.

You also have to consider where the package is being shipped. If it is out of the country, it’s going to be REALLY expensive!

The shipping price is USUALLY listed by the seller. You can also ask them the shipping price by going to “ask a question.” This sounds ilke a $10—$15 fee. Free shipping on items is not uncommon. Shoes are usually $6. I’ve paid under $3 dozens of times for purchases. Breakables tend to be $15.

I’ll expand on what others have said a little bit more.

The seller has free rein to charge anything he wants for shipping and handling.

As a starting point, eBay provides the seller with tools to estimate what the actual charges might be from the various delivery companies as well as the differences for parcel post, priority, overnight, etc. Estimation criteria include distance, weight, dimensions, insurance, etc.

The seller can then tack on any amount he wants to whatever the result of that estimate is. Or the seller can elect to simply charge a flat rate, again, of any amount.

EXAMPLE: If your purchase on eBay is a slip of paper that fits in a normal envelope and can be mailed with a 43¢ stamp, the seller might, in addition to the purchase price, then charge you a) nothing, or b) 43¢, or c) $10.00 or d) any other amount for the s&h!

The point is, you simply need to include the shipping costs into the total price of your eBay purchase, and decide if that’s actually a good value or not.

on many items shipping and handling is where the profit is made on items.

@fightfightfight Items from China can be very cheap, but the postage might be, say, $70.00. That means your $3.00 win turns out very expensive. Always look at the listing and ask the seller ALL questions before bidding. Once you’ve won, you MUST pay their shipping price.
