What to do with a bumper crop of sage?

I have an incredibly large amount of sage this summer. The only thing I have ever done with it is use it in turkey stuffing. Any suggestions on other dishes to make with sage? It’s not exactly my favorite flavor; I prefer thyme with poultry.

My favorite candle scent is Yankee Candle’s Citrus and Sage. Any crafty-ish ideas with sage?

Boy, I’d dry it and pass along little containers to my friends. I’ve had a few friends do that for me and when I use their personal sage, I always acknowledge our friendship. Good for you having a bumper crop.

I’ll refrain from saying that you could sell to an auto parts store.

Dang! I was going to suggest the same as @MissA Anywayy, here is a great site for instructions on drying sage. link It really does make a great gift.

I may “gift” my fluther friends with it; one of my neighbors just did a hit-and-run with a big bunch of basil, oregano…and more sage!! The basil will become pesto and frozen (I made walnut and gorgonzola pesto this afternoon) and oregano goes into the oven at 285 degrees for a few hours, and saved.

I wish I could get thyme to grow the way the sage does!! I do have the parsley and rosemary.

Thyme is usually pretty prolific. It spreads a lot.

@marinelife, I can’t get it or chives to grow to save my life. Not from seeds, not from purchased plants. It’s frustrating. I have a lot of fennel this year, too. It’s popping up all over the garden.

Find some old nylons, and make little satchels filled with baking soda and a few sage leaves. Makes everything smell fresh and pretty. You can also give them away – especially to a friend who is up to their eyeballs in pets or children and doesn’t have the time to clean out all the smells.

You can distill the oils out of the leaves! Here’s a YouTube video on how to do that.

I love the smell of sage. After you distill the oil, you can heat the oils by using one of these or a fancier one if you please.

@andreaxjean, the oil is a cool idea. Perhaps I can make grapefruit oil and mix it with the sage oil. It sounds like it should not be ingested, but is good for aromatherapy, hair care and as a moisturizer. I will get some almond oil tomorrow and see what happens.

Sage is very sacred to the Native Americans and dried sage (burned on charcoal discs) is used by a lot of people to “smudge” houses and to smudge themselves (clear their energies)

I would dry it and package it in small bags or bundles and give it away or sell it. A local health food shop, alternative health shop, alternative bookstore….they all might be interested in locally grown sage. I like @andreaxjean suggestion, too.

@andreaxjean Technically, that’s sage infused oil, not sage essential oil.

And I second making your own smudge sticks. They’re a great way to freshen things up, get some good vibes going on, cover up bad smells – like a lot of incense, but without as many allergens.

Why I am thinking a spring of sage in an ice cube…..maybe with a raspberry would be festive in tea?? just plop a bit of sage and a raspberry in ice tray, add water and freeze.

I think I have seen mint before. Maybe I am wayyyyy out of line.

@jazmina88 I’ve definitely seen mint before, but sage would definitely be an awesome spin on things. Or to put it another way: Om nom nom!

@the808swede, I’ve never had sage pesto, although I did make a big batch of pesto today with basil, walnuts and gorgonzola. Yummy

Darn it! Somebody posted question about having grown too much cilantro, wants to know what to do with it! I wanted to reply “You and PandoraBoxx need to open a Mexican restaurant!”....but I lost the questions!

I’m about to be overrun with tomatoes. Maybe we all just need to get together and open a Mexican restaurant….
