Are apps for the ipad still adapted from the iphone?

Asked by tadpole (709points) June 26th, 2010

when the ipad first came out there were concerns raised about how some of the apps might work because they would be adapted from the iphone and not made specifically for the ipad…i think one of the issues here was to do with the stretching of the iphone made app to the ipad and it’s bigger screen…there might have been other concerns as well..

i went into my local newsagents and saw half a dozen magazines on apps for iphone and ipad…no magazine yet just for ipad…i wonder if the issues above raised initially have been resolved, or in truth amounted to nothing…these magazines did mostly not differentiate between apps for each device, that is all apps were suitable for both…

how likely is this to be true? have the apps been successfully adapted for the ipad? or have they been re-developed specifically for it? i know it still has not been long since it came out…i am really looking for people’s opinions on this….i accept there are probably better ways to find apps than buy a magazine on them…i was just wondering about it…

i recall there is something about re-buying apps for free once bought….would this cover the adaptations from iphone too? how do you know if you have an adapted app or one made especially for ipad? i don’t suppose it matters, just curious really…

hope to hear some opinions and thoughts…:-)

There are a ton of apps that are iPad only now. And a lot of them are really good.

I have a quite a few apps that are built specifically for the iPad. If the UK app store doesn’t yet have a tab for iPad only apps you can do a search for apps with “HD” in the title. It isn’t perfect since not all iPad apps have “HD” in their titles, but a good number do and it may be a good place to start looking.

i was irritated by the magazines not being clear enough about it…sure they will sell more issues if it looks like all apps can be used on both fronts…i’m not totally clear on apple’s purchase policy, nor do i want to have to buy an adapted app that later gets made specially…buying apps is one of the ipad’s selling points for sure, but could become expensive…

@drClaw thanks for the tip…..the apple site has a tab on it’s ipad main page for apps just for ipad so i’ll use that too…

There are now several resources focussed on showcasing apps that are designed just for the iPad (not just blown-up iPhone apps).

The best is Apple’s own official iPad apps .

Tasty iPad apps only showcases iPad apps as well with nice bite-sized reviews to go with each app.

Finally, App Safari is a huge resource that extends from the iPhone world.
