Do you answer polls?

Asked by thekoukoureport (4023points) June 27th, 2010

We are constantly barraged with poll results on TV. It’s now part of shaping the news broadcasts. But I don’t know anyone who is answering the questions. So who is actually shaping public opinion?

No. No one has asked.

Does answering this question constitute answering a poll?

wilma's avatar

Yes. They call me on the phone, and I sometimes answer then online.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Yes, but the only ones I’ve been asked to take have been unrelated to the state of the union.

I have only had one contact me. I am pretty sure that they didn’t like my answers and have never been called back

Yes, sometimes.

I love getting polled. It allows me to poison their data. If even a small handful of people were dilligent at this, we could throw a wrench into the plans of a lot of very evil organizations (like governments and corporations).

I guess the statistics that are added up is what shapes the opinion. I don’t like polls and statistics, because I feel they often restrain, but in the end I think that’s the point, and it would be too hard to collect exceptions, explanations, justifications and whatnot from so many people. Maybe it does its job if you need a rough but accurate estimate. As long as the papers still allow people to voice themselves otherwise, or through news broadcasts and shit, it’s fine. Maybe it’s kinda like voting, one will make of it what what they will.
I personally don’t answer them often, if at all.

I will participate in legitimate ones where it is apparent the pollster has done due diligence to get a representative sample. I will not participate in open polls where anyone who wants is encouraged to answer. The results are meaningless. All they show is the bias of the medium in which the poll was presented. I see no sense in wasting time and potentially disclosing personal attitudes for no benefit.

Most of the polls I’ve been asked to answer were really misleading at some point. In fact, the last poll I was attempting to answer started out quite benign… but when the recorded voice asked me if I agreed with Obama that we should use federal funds to kill babies, I said “What a crock of bullshit.” and hung up. Pure propaganda.

The calls I get are mostly surveys, and I answer them when I have time.

HA HA! About 20 years ago my brother-in-law found himself on a phone taking a survey about Denny’s restaurants. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a 24 hour pancake house, but they serve burgers and stuff too.
The poll person asked him when he went to Denny’s and how often. BIL said, “At 2 in the morning when the bars close down and I’m drunk and starving.”
And THAT’S the truth right there!

I was once polled as to what my all time favorite holiday dessert was and I answered “Fruit Cake” and they said you are joking and I said “No” and they hung up.

ETpro's avatar

@Cruiser One more poll aiming to get a specific answer in order to claim they “studied” it. BTW I love fruit cake too.

Shouldn’t this question have been a poll? You could have cut the irony with a fork.

Sometimes, if I feel it is an important poll. Important to me that is.
