iPhone + jailbreak + Tinyproxy app = Internet for your laptop

No joke? That is pretty sweet. I read this, and started laughing to myself, thinking is hairy for real. Leave it squirbel to pull the wool from my eyes. I hope they have a similar app. in the app. store.

Yeah but it is slooooow.

Before I had my iPhone, I had a Nokia that would tether to my laptop via bluetooth. I could check flights while in the cab, whatever, it was awesome. Yeah, it was a bit slow at times, but sometimes it was zippy, depending on where you were in the country (I found that the AT&T service was faster on the East coast)

But the key is the convenience; you could often get coverage where no one else could… if I had to wait a bit to get the important information I needed, it was worth it. (and of course I’m mentioning this because I was on the same exact plan on the Nokia that I now have with my iPhone…AT&T Medianet)

When iPhone 2.0 comes out (hopefully 3G, and hopefully w. bluetooth tethering) it would be grand. (not holding my breath)

blippio Did you read squirbel’s response? She told you how to make your iPhone into a modem, and even said it is slooooow. I don’t really know what your response was getting at.

What I was getting at was that I found the connection I had w. my Nokia—which is actually the exact connection with the “modded” iPhone (same carrier/plan/bandwidth)—to no be so slow, but actually usable…kapeesh?

I may have provided a bit too much detail, as I’m prone to do ;)

bulbatron9's avatar

No, it was just a poorly written, jumbled up mess, which you are so prone to do…. Capeesh? Spelled with a “C”, for future reference!

Oh please, bulbatron. It was actually clearly written but I think you may not have had the patience to read a detailed, coherent sentence.

…and for the record, it’s really “capice”, but I dumbed it a down a bit for ya. ;)

1940’s slang, from It. capisci? “do you understand?” (also coppish, kabish, capeesh, etc.).

bulbatron and blippio, how old are u guys?Twelve? C’mon now…. Don’t highjack the poor boy’s topic to bicker.. No one cares except you guys about who’s right about Italian words. Can we just stay on topic please? :-/

Alright, to answer his question: yes, making your iPhone work as a modem is possible. It is slow (thank you bulbatron) and it does. work in a pinch when you need it (and thank you blippio.) I did the same thing with my RAZR as blippio did with his Nokia. Yes it was slow but it got the job done. So it really is up to you whether you want to risk your iPhone’s life by jailbreaking it just to check movie showtimes or whatever, when you can use the default iPhone firmware to do some of the same simple tasks on the fast enough (for now til 3G) EDGE or WiFi to overcome minor inconveniences. Just let your iPhone be what is born to be. No reconstructive surgery… :-P
