What's the best way of stopping my Beagle from eating its own poop?

Asked by BraeBoy (35points) June 30th, 2010

I have a new dog (one year old, one previous owner). She’s arrived with the unpleasant habit of eating her own poop if I don’t immediately clear it up. I can’t always spot it instantly – so, has anyone else had this dog problem? If so, how did you solve it?

For the first time last night she was sick and it was horrifically smelly! I hope she’s learned a lesson from this episode but I doubt it!

I’ve known of dogs eating poop – particularly cat poop – but I’ve never known for it to make them sick.

I’ve read that a little meat tenderizer sprinkled on their dog food will deter them from eating their own poop, but I don’t know the exact amount. You may be able google for other additives too.

Walk her on a leash and pull her away from their poop when she goes to eat it and say, “Off”.
Reward her with a treat immediately.

I should add that she is always kept on a lead when walking so her mess is bagged immediately. These ‘sneaky snacks’ she has are when she’s in the garden and we don’t notice it quickly enough – 10 seconds is enough time! Interestingly, she’s also not that interested in other dogs’ mess when we are out walking.

You have to stay alert when she is taking a poop! Stand on the leash so she can’t get to her poop, and clean it up.

You need to take her to the vet and eliminate a physical cause. She could not be getting enough nutrition. What are you feeding her?

Then, as to the habit, you have to only let her poop in controlled circumstances (on the leash) and clean up the poop afterwards. If she goes for her poop, say no sharply.

It could be the quality of food she is eating. If most of it is eliminated and she therefore wants to eat it again so to speak, you need to find food that will be fully digested, and the result will be less enticing.

beat her to it.

Thanks everyone for the advice, she is on expensive nutrient enriched food that her vet recommended so it may be that she is going in for a second time round as it still smells good (to her!) She eats everything from paper to soil to towels and rocks even when she has had a big meal so it’s not a hunger thing but I will switch food and see if that helps. Sorry for such a yucky subject!

Spray the poop with lemon or vinegar. The strong odour should deter it from eating anymore of its own faeces. ;P
