How do I cure my nasal spray addiction?

Asked by truecomedian (3937points) July 2nd, 2010

I am addicted to nasal spray. There was a day when there was a lot of vog, volcanic smog, and my nose clogged up. I used some nasal spray, and now something called “rebound congestion” is happening. Where the nose becomes more clogged than it was. It really sucks.

1) stop using the spray. No two ways about it.
2) get some Pseudoephedrine at the pharmacy counter (they will only sell you a months supply at a time)
3) Use the Pseudoephedrine strictly according to directions.

What nasal spray are you using? And what’s vog?

truecomedian's avatar

@papayalily generic with oxymetazoline, just used some now…
Vog is from volcanic activity, it’s like smog but worse

Oxymetazoline HCl is a long acting decongestant. It should be used no more than twice in 24 hours and not for more than 2 to 3 days at a time.

Oops, I use it everyday, for about a month now. My nose is in a bad way.

You have vasomotor rhinitis, which is a common side effect of Afrin. There are several ways to stop. First way is to wean yourself off of it by diluting the Afrin with saline and slowly using more and more diluted solutions. Second is just to stop, but use hypertonic nasal saline irrigations with a rubber bulb syringe, a neti pot, or a pulsitile nasal saline irrigator. It also helps to go to the doctor and get nasal steroids.

Take an antihistamine or two and decide Today is the day! If you must spray, make sure it is only with saline. You will be miserable for a day -but so what. It is worth the effort.
~Afrin is more addictive than crack.

Watch out for that stuff, it elevates your heartrate too, setting you up for atrial fibrillation and possible stroke!

I quit cold turkey and was pleasantly surprised to see my sinuses “normalize” in just a day or too. Try it.
