Is this animal cruelty?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) July 3rd, 2010

A man stocks his man-made, small pond with fish. the fish have no place to go and are practically starved to death. the man charges an admission price for men, women and children to come inside and fish in his stocked fish pond. once a year, he conducts a fishing rodeo for a prize to the person with the most caught fish. should this be or could this be considered animal cruelty?

I think it’s exploitive and cruel, yes.

Fish have feelings too.

What a life, to live in overcrowded and underfed conditions and then, you grab for a bite of food and get your lungs ripped out.

Sad.

Fish cruelty, perhaps.

I do think it’s cruel, yes.
Reminds me of the people that set up hunts where the animals are essentially trapped in an enclosure for the “hunters.”

I have absolutely no problems whatsoever with hunting or fishing – but hunting/fishing captive and mistreated animals?? I don’t see how people can do that and not feel ashamed at the end of the day.

I will not consider that as animal cruelty. First of all, fish(especially common/less endangered fish) are not in the range of law of animal protection. Second, those fish are there for that purpose, whether they’re caught or left to die there they will be dead eventually. Third,If that man didn’t own a specific certificate and permission from the authorities then he could be caught. I know since there many people(authorized) do such thing in my country and this is seen as common and not cruel at all. And if they feed the fish then none of the fish will bite the bait, see why?.

Yea…. problem is, no one gives a fuck about fish. Its quite annoying really. You can do anything to fish without it being animal cruelty but god forbid it was some sort of mammal or something, everyone would be all up in arms about the whole thing.

That is what happens at thousands and thousands of ponds and lakes in the UK and Millions of Britains attend everyday!
The rodeo as you call it is called match angling here and generates millions of pounds a year.
Check out one of the most successful ponds
You’re all entitled to your own opinions but over here it is commonplace and I don’t have a problem with it.

@Mat74UK – but it being commonplace doesn’t make it ok….nothing should be forced to live in an overcrowded space and starving.
