Does anyone have experience living in Texas? (The Houston area, specifically)

Asked by rangerr (15765points) July 10th, 2010

My aunt and her family live in Houston not sure what part… I know Houston is huge though... She asked me today if I’d be willing to move to Texas with them and be a nanny for their two kids.
I adore them. And I’m really considering going down there.

Considering that it’d be a big move, I have a lot of questions.

1.) What is there to do as far as entertainment for a 19 year old? Or your favorite things to do.. I know there’s a lot to do.
2.) What is there to do with two kids ages 5 and 3?
3.) Assuming there are community colleges, what are they like?
4.) How is the music scene down there?
5.) Is bike riding most places instead of driving possible? How are driving conditions?
6.) I’d need somewhere to ride horses. It’s Texas… I assume that’s not going to be too difficult.
7.) Anything cool for geeks? Comic stores..etc.?
8.) Weather. Can the weather be summarized?

I have no idea what I’m forgetting to ask… is there anything else you can tell me about living in Texas?

I live in San Antonio, I’m about 2½ hours from Houston. Its a huge city and there are tons of things to do. Plus you are located fairly close to other large cities such as San Antonio, Dallas, there’s also Austin which is fun. I’m sure though you will find anything you want to do in Houston. Look up the yellow pages for Houston and just browse around it searching for things you’re interested in. It should give you a rather good idea or not of what’s in the city that peaks your interest

1. There is lots to do but lots of distance driving.
2. school, sports, arts, fun things for pay
3. Lots of religious stuff.
4 Do not know
5. I doubt it about bikes as the traffic is fast and heavy but do not know as I stayed in or near a pool.
6. Lots of driving to get to a horse and the weather is horrible there. Very hot and humid. You would be best to join a club or riding school.
7. Lots of geek stuff.
8. Weather. Hot hot hot humid humid humid. If you like indoors it is great. Just like a big big spread out city.

Eating out, dancing, plays, shows, movies, shopping… you name it, and chances are Houston has it! : )

I don’t live in Houston, although my step-daughter and her husband do. I live about 3 hours North-North-East.

I have been to Houston on extended business trips. It is a car centered metropolitan area, made up of lots of outlying mini city areas. They do have a light rail system. Finding out exactly where in Houston your aunt lives will better shape the answers to your questions.

I live in Houston and there is tons to do.
1.lots of different clubs and places for the younger crowd to hang out, no matter what you’re in to. This is a very diverse and cultural city.
2. Kids that age would love the childrens museum, discovery green, hermann park, miller outdoor theatre, splash town ( those are just a beginning)
3. HCC is the main community college out here. There are many HCC campuses and is a great place to start your
college career.
4. not too sure about the music scene, but I know there are many different venues that play all different types of music.
5. You will need a car. It’s a big city. I’m not gonna lie, traffic is hell and you’ll use the interstate to get around to most places. My job is 13 miles from my house and it takes me about 30–35 mins to get there.
6. It will not be hard at all to find somewhere to ride.
7. Not sure
8. Ooooh the weather. Summers are hot as hell, seriously. You WILL sweat your butt off and the humidity is horrible as well. You’ll wake up in the morning and it’ll be already 85 degrees. Winters are freezing, it snowed last winter!! Actually enough to make some snowmen.
Houston has great shopping and wonderful resturants. You can find anything here. Like with any city, becareful you don’t wind up in the wrong neighborhood.
You could ride out to Galveston and take a walk on the beach or head over to Austin and go through hill country, it’s all pretty cool. If you have any other questions let me know :)

I have only been to Houston once, and I agree with the people who have said the traffic is really bad, and you need a car. Maybe in the outlying suburbs you can use your bike to get to local stores, but everywhere I went I would be terrified to ride a bike. But, my experience was very limited to the Galleria area and MD Anderson. By the way, talking about the Galleria, the shopping is very good in Houston.

I would guess there is plenty to do with young kids, museums, and there must be pools everywhere, indoor playgrounds, etc.

I should say my overall impression of the city was a good one, I would consider moving there if the right opportunity came up.

I recommend you visit before you decide. Your 19, if you don’t like it after several months you can always go back home right?

There must be community colleges, BUT since you show an interest in getting a college education, I think you should spend some time thinking about what 4 year university you might want to go to eventually, and make the classes you take at community will transfer. Do you have any idea what you want to major in?

Where do you live now?

I used to live in Houston and I didn’t like it. However, I was with my ex back then and it didn’t go so well.

Texas weather is a bit chaotic and it’s very humid down in Houston.
There are definitely places to ride horses.
I think the music scene is pretty big (not as big as Austin though).
Places to ride your bike… Yeah I think you’ll be fine.
There are plenty of things to do. Parks, museums, movies, etc. The city is huge so you won’t have a problem there.

For the most part, Texas is pretty cool. Most people are real cool down here (souther hospitality). Austin is much better in terms of weather, music, and people but it’s only 3 hours away so you can always take a mini vacation. :)
