How did windows vista get on my computer?

Asked by Harrow185 (298points) July 12th, 2010

I turned my computer off then back on because my sound icon was missing, and when I turned it back on my start menu had a different setup. It had the “windows vista” going vertically up the left side of the start menu. I didn’t even download it. I want my old windows back, and I don’t know what I’m doing. Can you please help me get my old windows back! Thanks

It’s not just the task bar gone vertical? What operating system did your computer have on it before this?

Wow! I have no idea how that could have happened. I will have to leave it to others, more knowledgeable than myself, to solve this mystery.

Can you take a screenshot and post it up here?
If you know that no one else has access to your computer, it could possibly be some kinda of malware messing with your XP theme.

Pretty much. An XP—>Vista upgrade is involved enough that it cannot “just happen”.

@jerv That’s what I was thinking but something is going on with @Harrow185‘s computer and hopefully someone here can and is willing to figure out what it is.

@lillycoyote It’s always difficult to troubleshoot precisely when you cannot touch a system and must rely on somebody who is far less skilled than you for info. If you ask a geek what is hogging their CPU, many will pop open the Task Manager, select “Show all processes”, and sort the list in order od descending CPU usage without needing a step-by-step walkthrough.

I suspiciously wonder if it is an infection. Hard to tell from here. Maybe just one setting has changed. I would have to see it. You may have had vista this entire time and not noticed. Can you verify that it is vista for us? When you restart your computer, does it show the “Starting windows XP” or does it say Vista?

What else has changed?
Are there other things that are the same?

Has your computer been sleeping around? Maybe that’s how it got the Vista.
