Anyone have super-quick crochet patterns or ideas?

Asked by gemiwing (14718points) July 14th, 2010

My BIL’s birthday is in two days and I want to crochet him a gift.

It’s Summer and hot hot hot here so I don’t know about giving him a hat or scarf. Plus, I need to keep some projects for Christmas gifts. Another issue is we don’t have money to buy new yarn, so I’m using up the yarn monster. I have mostly sport/DK weighted yarn, so using super bulky (my usual go-to for last minute gifts) is out.

He likes movies, music (indie) and his family.

I’m running out of ideas and growing frustrated. Anyone have any ideas for quick projects? Patterns are great- yet ideas are welcome as well. I’m hoping for something I can finish in a day.

@gemiwing this a tall order! My first thought was granny squares but for what? Of course the old standby is the granny square afghan, but that can’t be done in a day and it certainly is a winter time gift. My next thought would be coasters (just single crochets round and round until the size is right) but that probably won’t be very appealing to a guy. I’ll tell you what – I am going to be pondering this all day! I love it when Fluther does that to me, and sometimes it comes from the most unlikely places.

@SuperMouse See why I’m chewing off all my fingernails today? lol Yes, it is a tall order. I just can’t seem to think of anything. I mean a potholder.. but what guy wants a potholder? A half-apron? sigh Let me know if you think of anything- really anything. I’ve burned through Ravelry and Lion already and nothing seems to be catching me.

Here is a goofy bow tie any chance a gag gift would go over? If nothing else, the site has some other stuff you can peruse! Now I’m on a mission!

I think a gag gift would be fine as long as it’s about a movie or band…something like that I think. Gonna look at the site right now!

I like the Darth Vader hotsauce cover, it’s a bit.. uhm.. vague in appearance. Maybe I can create something like that- should be easy enough to make a pepper or something, yeah?

@gemiwing when I first read this question I really thought it might be a lost cause, but I like the hot sauce cozy. It shouldn’t be too tough to modify the pattern. If you have a chance, post a pic of the finished product!

FYI- Hubbs is getting that bowtie in red for Christmas. Perfect for a budding Whovian.

I’ll send you a pic- I’ll put it up on ravelry too. I hope it turns out alright! Thank you so much for your help- I really appreciate it!

Does he play video games? I have a bunch of great links for Mario Brothers plushies, some of which I whipped out in an hour or two.
